LOUISVILLE, KY - Senior goalkeeper Meredith Miller, with the help of a stingy Cardinal defense, notched her fifth consecutive shutout as the University of Louisville women's soccer team topped Southern Miss 2-0 Sunday at Cardinal Park.
"I don't think that we played very well, but I am pleased with the outcome," said U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"We continue to play well defensively, but we lack the passion and the energy we need for every C-USA game," Ferguson elaborated.
The shutout was the fifth of the season for Miller, tying her school record-tying 2003 total and adding to her school record 13 career shutouts. Miller and her teammates have now held opponents scoreless for 501 consecutive minutes.
The Cards(8-2-1, 3-0-1) have yet to surrender a goal in four C-USA matches, and remain in a tie for first place with Tulane.
Freshman Jen Avila converted her second penalty kick of the season in as many tries in the 32nd minute to give the Cards a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Jamie Craft was dragged down in the box to set up the PK for the Cards.
In the second half, senior Lisa Martin lead Craft who split two Southern Miss defenders and beat USM keeper Anna Snyder at 57:17, making it 2-0 Cards. It was Craft's 10th goal on the season.
Louisville outshot Southern Miss(5-4-1, 1-3-0) 16-4 and forced Snyder to make six saves, while Miller faced just two shots on goal.
Eight different Cards tallied a shot, lead by Craft and Monique Gjini with three each. Mandy Rost, Gina Lower, Laura Walker and Avila had two apiece, with Hollie Minogue and Amy Seng each contributing one.
The Cardinal defense held high-scoring forward Lauren Prewitt without a shot in the match.
Louisville, who is 5-0-0 on the road will travel to Chicago to face DePaul on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and up to Milwaukee where they play Marquette on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. U of L returns home to host Morehead State in a non-conference match on October 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
