CHICAGO, IL - A late goal by defending Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year Julianne Sitch, lifted DePaul to a 2-1 win over the University of Louisville in double overtime Friday night in women's soccer.
"This is a very tough field to play on and Sitch is one of the top players in the region," stated Cardinal Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"The only real disappointment in the afternoon was the outcome. I thought we played extremely well," Ferguson added.
DePaul (6-6-1, 2-3-1 C-USA) jumped to a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the match on Jennifer Dyer fourth of the season.
The Cards(8-3-1, 3-1-1 C-USA) outshot the Blue Demons 9-2 in the first half, and in the 35th minute sophomore Jamie Craft scored her league-leading 11th goal of the season to knot the match at one. Senior Mandy Rost notched her third assist on the year on the goal.
Lindsey Deason made six saves for DePaul, and Meredith Miller had four stops for the Cards, an both combined to hold the deadlock through the second half and the first overtime.
At 108:59, Sitch headed in a pass from Erin Walter for Sitch's seventh on the year. To that point, Cardinal Freshman Jen Avila had shadowed Sitch for the better part of the match before Avila was forced out by an injury, limiting Sitch to three shots.
Louisville held a 19-9 advantage in shots for the match, with Craft leading the way with seven. Lauren Podvin had five and Monique Gjini four. Lisa Martin was credited with two shots and Rost had the other Cardinal shot.
The loss was the first of the season in C-USA play for the Cards who will now travel up the road to Milwaukee to face Marquette at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday to close out the road swing.
Louisville returns home next Friday to host Morehead State at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park. Admission is free.
