Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville's men soccer team defeated East Carolina 1-0 Saturday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cards improve to 8-5 on the season and 3-2 in league play. The Pirates fall to 3-5-2 on the season and 0-4-1 in league play.
"Tonight our defense played very solid," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "East Carolina made it very difficult for us at times. They are very well coached and have a lot of energy.
"I thought tonight was Felipe Tolomelli's night. He has been waiting to start and end a game like tonight and he was outstanding tonight. He deserves a lot of credit for fighting back from his injury. I also thought Simon Bird was very dangerous tonight as always."
Transfer Ryan Edwards scored the game winner off a cross from freshman Clay Talley in the 41st minute to put the Cards up 1-0 at the half. The Cards outshot the Pirates 12-1 in the first half.
Pirate keeper Brian Pope collected five saves on the evening, including three shots from Cardinal senior Simon Bird. Bird had six of Louisville's 19 shots. For the game, the Cards outshot the Pirates 19-4. Cardinal keeper Brad Sokolowski collected one save on the evening.
Louisville will be back in action as they host Cincinnati Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
