RICHMOND, KY - Clinging to a 5-4 lead in the seventh, the Louisville Cardinal baseball team exploded for 11 runs and completed a season sweep of Eastern Kentucky with a resounding 16-4 win over the Colonels(14-29) in Richmond on Wednesday.
Junior outfielder Josh Bolen was 3 for 5 with his 11th double, ninth home run, four runs scored and five RBI to lead the offensive attack.
Eastern jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run home run by Aaron Williams. The Cards tied things up in the second. Morgan Bojorquez walked to lead off and Bolen doubled.
Freshman DH Curt Stewart singled home Bojorquez, and third baseman Mike Budak's sixth sacrifice fly of the season plated Bolen.
Eastern responded in the home half of the second, taking a 4-2 lead on another two-run homer, this one by Chris Clark.
With two out in the third, sophomore right fielder Mark Jurich homered to center, his team-leading 13th of the season, cutting the margin to 4-3.
Second baseman Scott Gerlach hit his fifth double of the season with one out in the fifth, and scored on an RBI single by Dave Williams Jr., tying the score at four.
Bolen scored on an error in the sixth to give U of L a 5-4 advantage.
The seventh began with a walk to second baseman J.T. LaFountain. One out later Bojorquez singled, and a single by Bolen plated two. Stewart singled home Bolen, and Budak cranked his fifth home run of the season for a 10-4 lead.
Ken Tirpack walked and Gerlach singled. Will Shelton, LaFountain and Jurich followed with consecutive RBI singles.
With two out, Bolen blasted a three-run shot, his ninth of the year to cap the 11 run outburst with Louisville ahead of EKU 16-4.
Zach Jackson entered in relief and picked up his team-leading sixth win. Jackson(6-1) twirled 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits while fanning four.
Carlos Fernandez gave up one hit and struck out one in an inning of work and Grant Williams closed things out with two innings of scoreless work. He gave up a hit and two walks to go with a pair of strikeouts.
Scott Santa(1-4) took the loss for Eastern.
Stewart was 3 for 5 with two RBI while Gerlach was 3 for 5. Jurich had a pair of knocks and drove in two.
Budak had three RBI on the afternoon, adding a sacrifice.
The Cardinals(29-12,14-7) defeated Eastern 16-1 in Louisville on March 6 earlier this season. U of L has won three straight and 10 of its last 12.
Louisville will next travel to New Orleans to face Tulane(27-20, 11-10) for a three-game weekend set in Conference USA action. Game one is on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
