HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The University of Louisville softball team fell to Conference USA rival Southern Miss 1-0 in 10 innings Sunday at Southern Miss.
The two teams battled in a pitcher's duel which saw Southern Miss with four hits and Louisville with three in the regulation seven innings.
The Cards best opportunity to score came in the sixth inning when Kenzie Meisenburg belted a one-out triple, but Louisville could not convert.
With the game still tied at 0-0, the teams moved into extra innings. Still scoreless in the tenth, the Golden Eagles finally found an opportunity to scored when Diane Hammes reached on a Louisville error with one out and moved to second on Sarah Boyd's walk, advanced to third on Kristie Martin's infield single to load the bases. Hammes was thrown out at home when Amanda Brown hit into a fielder's choice for the second out of the game. With bases still loaded Kenya Peters blasted a single to left field to give Southern Miss the 1-0 win.
Louisville had a chance to score in the ninth inning when Sara Bausher led off with a double, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Southern Miss starter Jessica Holaway retired the next three batters to preserve the shutout.
"It was a well played game by both teams," said Louisville head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Both of us had chances to win, we just didn't capitalize on our opportunities."
Louisville starter Jessica Rak (17-9) took the loss allowing one unearned run on seven hits in 9.2 innings and striking out four. Meisenburg, Bausher, Melissa Jacobo and Lisa Estes each had hits for the Cards.
