Softball Splits Kentucky Doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team defeated host Kentucky 5-1 and then lost 9-1 in the nightcap Wednesday.
In the first game U of L grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Aja Sherman led off with a single and took second on a wild pitch. Kenzie Meisenburg followed with a single and Sara Bausher's two-run double brought in Sherman and Meisenburg to put the Cards out in front 2-0.
Louisville added three more runs in the fourth as Shannon Nord started the inning with a single and moved to second on Lisa McMillan's base hit. Sherman was safe on a fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to load the bases. Nord crossed the plate when Lisa Estes reached on a fielder's choice. Sherman moved to third on Sara Bausher's fielder's choice and scored on a Kentucky error. Keola Calderon's single drove in Estes for a 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored a run in the sixth when Nikki Jones led off with a single, moved to second on a Louisville error, advanced to third on Friberg's hit and scored on a Cardinal error to put Kentucky on the scoreboard 5-1.
Meisenburg went 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored and a stolen base. Bausher finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI and McMillan went 2-for-3. Jessica Rak (18-9) got the win allowing one unearned run on five hits and striking out a season-high seven batters.
Offensively, the Wildcats were led by Jones who went 3-for-3. Morgan Marr (4-7) took the loss allowing five runs, four of them earned on seven hits.
In the second game, the Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first when Bausher singled, moved to second when Calderon grounded out and scored on Melissa Jacobo's hit.
The Wildcats responded in the home half of the first when Sandi Dengler led off with a single, moved to second on Jones' base hit, took third on Lyndsey Angus' fielder's choice and scored on Angie Dal Pozzo's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1.
Kentucky put up a six-spot in the third as Jones tripled down the right field line and scored when Angus reached on an error. Dal Pozzo followed with a single to set up Andi Eilertson's three-run homer to give the Wildcats the 5-1 lead. Meghan Cooper reached on a hit and crossed the plate on Jessica Nance's triple. Nance then came home on a Louisville error to give the Wildcats a 7-1 lead.
Kentucky put up two more runs in the sixth as Jones reached on a base hit, moved to second when Angus reached on a fielder's choice, a Cardinal error on the play advanced the runners. Dal Pozzo's two-run double gave UK the 9-1 win.
Krystle Herold (2-8) took the loss, allowing nine runs, five of them earned on 11 hits and struck out one in 5.1 had two hits. Nord went 3-for-3 , while Bausher finished 2-for-three with a run scored.
Jones led the Wildcats batting 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Meghan Cooper (9-7) got the win allowing one unearned run on nine hits and striking out three. Kentucky improves to 19-20.
Louisville (20-20) will play host to No. 16 DePaul in Conference USA action on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
