LOUISVILLE, KY - The University of Cincinnati baseball team evened the weekend series with Louisville at a game apiece with a 6-2 win over the Cardinals on Saturday. Starter Chad Pennington (5-2) scattered nine hits and two walks over nine innings in the win. He struck out five in his first career complete game.
Louisville(18-8, 7-4) nabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by second baseman J.T. LaFountain that plated catcher Ken Tirpack who had also doubled.
The Bearcats(12-17-1, 2-8-1) tied the game on an RBI double by shortstop Brad Schutz in the third.
Third baseman Brad Dorrmann singled home a run in the fourth to give UC a 2-1 lead and RBI singles by Chris Hamblen and Aaron Moll in the fifth extended the lead to 4-1.
Cincinnati DH Jake Smith bounced a two-run single over the head of a drawn in infield in the seventh, making it 6-1 UC.
A solo home run by Tirpack in the eighth determined the final deficit, it was his second of the season.
Louisville starter Zach Jackson (3-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks in 5.0 innings, striking out two.
Garrett Estabrook surrendered two runs, one of which was earned on three hits and a walk in the final four innings.
LaFountain was 3 for 5 with an RBI, while Tirpack had two hits and two runs scored.
The rubber game of the series is Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium. Admission is free.
