LOUISVILLE, KY - Four pitchers combined to allow one unearned run on five hits in a 5-1 win over Xavier Wednesday at Cardinal Stadium. Carlos De la Osa was 2 for 3 with three RBI, including his third home run of the year to lead the Cardinal offense.
Left fielder Josh Bolen reached on a one-out bunt single ahead of the laser to right hit by De la Osa. The sophomore DH from Miami ripped the 0-1 pitch into the bleachers on a line for the 2-0 lead.
Bolen singled with two out in the fourth, and was running on a hard single to the gap in left center by De la Osa. He easily scored for a 3-0 U of L lead.
Mark Jurich's team-leading 10th double scored second baseman J.T. LaFountain in the sixth, and third baseman Mike Budak's fifth sacrifice fly of the season plated Jurich for a 5-0 advantage.
A throwing error by pitcher Grant Williams put the leadoff batter in the ninth on second, and after a groundout, catcher Eric Armstrongs' sac fly scored the Musketeers(20-16) only run without the benfit of a hit.
Cardinal starter Clif Novak (1-1) was the winner, giving up just two hits and a walk in four shutout innings, sttriking out three.
Josh Ring allowed one hit and struck out two in three scoreless frames, while Carlos Fernandez allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one in the eighth.
Williams struck out one, giving up just the unearned run in the ninth.
Xavier starter Adam Jahnsen(7-4) took the loss, surrendering two runs on two hits in 1.2 frames. Five other pitchers allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk and a strikeout.
Jurich was 3 for 4 and De la Osa and Bolen each had two knocks. De la Osa is now 8 for his last 13 with a home run and two doubles.
Louisville will open a three game weekend set with Conference USA opponent Charlotte Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET at Cardinal Stadium. Admission is free.
