LOUISVILLE, KY - A four-run eighth vaulted the Louisville Cardinal baseball team to 4-3 come from behind win over Charlotte in game one of a three-game weekend set Friday at Cardinal Stadium. Louisville has now won four straight, and won its sixth game of the season in the eighth inning or later.
Charlotte second baseman George Sandel smacked his third home run of the season in the first, putting the 49ers(17-20, 7-8) up 1-0.
Sandel singled home a run in the third for a 2-0 advantage, and back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth put them ahead of the Cards 3-0.
Charlotte starter Matt Landphair cruised through seven, allowing just two hits. A leadoff walk to Curt Stewart in the eighth, his fourth of the game, ended his day.
Reliever Matt Johnson entered and retired Fernando Isa on a hard line drive to left before a solid single by Dave Williams Jr. plated Stewart.
The book closed on Landphair, as he allowed a run on two hits and four walks to go with four strikeouts in seven innings.
With two out in the frame, second baseman J.T. LaFountain ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Williams, and trimming the lead to 3-2. An intentional walk was issued to Mark Jurich and 49er closer Jacob Chaney entered to face Morgan Bojorquez, who walked to load the bases.
Up stepped left fielder Josh Bolen, who entering the inning had the only two hits of the game for the Cards. The junior outfielder singled home a pair of runs to give the Cards a 4-3 advantage.
Josh Ring walked the leadoff batter of the ninth and gave way to Grant Williams who notched a strikeout, hit a batter and induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play for his second save of the season.
Scott Barber (2-3) picked up the win, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks in eight innings. He struck out a career-high eight batters.
Johnson(1-2) was the loser for Charlotte, surrendering three runs on two hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.
Bolen was 3 for 4 with two RBI, and ended the eighth by charging and catching a line drive off the bat of Joey Bradshaw, and firing a seed to first doubling off Sandel on a brilliant defensive play.
Louisville(23-10, 11-5) continues the three game weekend set with Conference USA opponent Charlotte Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Cardinal Stadium. Admission is free.
