Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team (2-9-2, 0-2-1) battled UAB (5-3-3, 1-1-2) to a scoreless tie Saturday night in Cardinal Park.
Last season's leading scorer Simon Bird returned to the lineup tonight after going down the first game of the season with a broken collar bone. Bird recorded seven shots, including three on goal for his return. His best shot came in the 19th minute of play and just hit the cross bar.
"Overall it was one of our best performances," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "What a difference Simon Bird makes. His confidence spilled over to the rest of the team. He certainly makes us a more dangerous team.
"After the Ohio State loss we moved to a new system. The players had just three days to learn it and they deserve all the credit because they had faith. It was a tremendous team effort against a good UAB team."
UAB had a chance to win the game with just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime period when Ngwe Nnamdi got a shot past goalkeeper Brad Sokolowski but Dan Martin headed it out.
Louisville outshot UAB 15-10. Cardinal keeper Brad Sokolowski collected four saves on the night while UAB keeper Clint Baumstark also collected four.
The Cardinals will travel to Marquette Tuesday, Oct. 15 for a 8:00 p.m. match.
