A five-run third inning that featured three home runs, boosted Eastern Kentucky to an 8-4 win over Louisville in baseball action Wednesday in Richmond, Kentucky.
The Colonels(19-25) loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, and plated a run when second baseman Robby Price was hit by a Mike Eilers pitch, giving EKU a 1-0 lead.
A solo home run off the bat of Eastern first baseman John Myles to lead off the third, and a two-run blast to right by catcher Mike Schnieder chased Eilers and gave the Colonels a 4-0 advantage. Cardinal reliever Garrett Estabrook replaced Eilers, and retired the first two batters he faced, before a single and another two-run home run, this one off the bat of third baseman Nick Sellers put the Colonels up 6-0.
Louisville managed to cut the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. Third baseman Mike Budak and right fielder Morgan Bojorquez hit consecutive RBI singles with the bases loaded to score catcher Fernando Isa who lead off with an infield single, and shortstop Adam Haley, who drew a one out walk. Designated hitter Mark Jurich followed the singles with a scorching line drive to left center that was snared by EKU centerfielder Josh Anderson on a diving catch, saving three runs and ending the rally with the Cards trailing 6-2.
Left fielder Dave Williams Jr. lead off the eighth with a single up the middle, and scored from first on a double to the gap by Isa, his 10th two-bagger on the season, cutting the lead to 6-3 Eastern.
A two-out RBI double by Sellers in the eighth, followed by an RBI single by Price gave the Colonels an 8-3 lead.
Bojorquez homered to left center, his fourth of the season, with one out in the ninth to secure the final margin at 8-4.
Eilers(4-3) took the loss, tossing just two-plus innings and giving up four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out one. Estabrook was touched for two runs on two hits and a walk to go with three whiffs. Derek Davis wrapped things up with the final three stanzas, surrendering two runs on four hits and one strikeout.
For the Colonels, Scott Santa(5-6) was the winner, throwing three scoreless innings and giving up just two hits. Josh Thomas got the final five outs of the game, Bojorquez's homer his only blemish to pick up his first save. He struck out four.
Haley was hit in the eighth, for the 13th time this season, surpassing Hook's record of 12 set last season. Haley also holds the single game standard of three, set earlier this season against Cincinnati. Hook has been hit a record 23 times in his career, six times this season, surpassing Troy Hilpp for the career record. Haley is tied with Hilpp, getting plunked 20 times.
Bojorquez was 3 for 5 with two RBI, and Isa had two hits. Anderson was the only Colonel starter without a base hit.
Louisville(27-24, 10-11) travels to Birmingham, Alabama to face UAB in a three-game weekend series beginning Friday.
