Mike Tisdale won his seventh game of the season, and Josh Ring picked up his eighth save on the year, leading U of L to a 4-3 win over conference leading Houston Saturday at Cardinal Stadium. It is just the fourth loss in 20 Conference USA games for Houston this season, and breaks a streak of eight straight wins over Louisville, dating back to an 8-3 Cardinal win on April 26th, 1998
Houston struck first in the top of the first with a single tally to take a 1-0 lead. With two out, third baseman Hyung Cho blasted a ground rule double to left center, and scored on a single up the middle by catcher Chris Snyder. A sacrifice fly to center by second baseman Sean Allen scored right fielder Sam Mitchell who lead off with a walk to give UH a 2-0 advantage.
The Cards took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Designated hitter Mark Jurich reached on a single and advanced to second on an error. He was moved to third on a groundout by catcher Fernando Isa, and scored on an RBI single by left fielder Dave Williams Jr. Shortstop Adam Haley was hit by the next pitch, and center fielder Mike Hook sacrificed the runners to second and third. With an 0-2 count and two out, second baseman Matt Jarboe laced a double to the gap in left center to plate Haley and Hook, and give U of L the 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, right fielder Morgan Bojorquez opened the frame with a single to left, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Brennan Hall. Jurich followed with his eighth double of the season off the wall in right-center to score Bojorquez, and increase the Cardinal lead to 4-2.
In the top of the eighth, the Cougars edged closer with a single tally. Cho lead off with his second double of the game, and after moving to third on a wild pitch, was plated on a ground out by pinch-hitter Thanos Papvasiliou, making it 4-3.
Tisdale(7-5) is now tied for eighth on the single season win list at U of L, after tossing seven innings, and giving up three runs on eight hits and a walk, while striking out seven. Ring has sole possession of second place on the single season save list, and fourth on the career list with his two perfect innings of relief. Ring struck out pinch hitter Keith Whatley looking for the final out of the game and his only strikeout.
Louisville had four sacrifice bunts in the game, and Jurich was the only Cardinal with a multi-hit game, going 2 for 3 with a walk. Haley has now been hit 12 times this season, tying the school record set by Hook last season. He has been plunked 19 times in his career, one short of the career record of 20 set by Troy Hilpp('97-'00). Haley also shares the single game record of three, set earlier this season at Cincinnati(3/16).
UH starter Austin Faught(4-6) took the loss, tossing 5.1 frames, and giving up four runs on six hits while striking out five. Reliever Bryan Harris walked one and struck out two in 2.2 innings.
Louisville(26-23, 9-11) will face Houston(25-22, 16-4) in the rubber game, Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.
