LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Mike Tisdale upped his record to 3-2 throwing a complete game five-hitter as the University of Louisville Cardinals earned a 5-0 win over Southern Illinois in Cardinal Stadium. With the victory, U of L improves to 10-9 on the season while SLU drops to 6-7.
Tisdale struck out 11 and allowed just one Saluki baserunner to reach second base in the first of a three-game series.
U of L got all the runs it needed in the third inning, scoring three times against starter and eventual loser Josh Latimer (1-1).
The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the third then watched as Latimer walked LF Bill Gatti, Jr., to force in the game's first run.
After a Mike Budak fly out, 1B Morgan Bojorquez grounded into a fielder's choice to drive in CF Mike Hook. A wild pitch moved Gatti, Jr., to third and Bojorquez to second and Gatti scored when Latimer was called for his second balk of the afternoon.
Hook paced the Cardinal offense with a two-for-four afternoon including his 14th and 15th stolen bases of the season.
The Cardinals added a single run in the fourth inning as SS Adam Haley singled to right field driving in RF Kevin Fishback.
U of L closed the scoring in the seventh when SLU 3B Luke Nelson threw away a two-out Gatti, Jr., ground out, allowing Hook to score his second run of the afternoon.
The Cardinals and Salukis play game two of a three-game set Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET.
