
Cardinal Baseball Defeats Illinois State 5-4

The Louisville Cardinals defeated the Illinois State Redbirds 5-4 in baseball action at Cardinal Stadium Friday afternoon.
Mike Tisdale (2-2) tossed 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits to go with four strikeouts to pick up the win. Josh Ring tossed an inning and a third, picking up his fourth save, giving up one run on one hit, striking out two.
The Cardinals(7-8) opened up the scoring in the third when leftfielder Bill Gatti Jr. singled home centerfielder Mike Hook, who had singled with one out. Louisville added a second run in the fourth. Designated hitter Carlos De la Osa walked for the second time in the game to lead off the inning, and came home on a fielder's choice by second baseman Matt Jarboe.
Illinois State(4-3) took the lead in the fifth with five consecutive two-out singles, making it 3-2. Centerfielder Ryan Cantrell and right fielder Jared Dufalt each drove in runs in the frame.
Doubles by third baseman Mike Budak and first baseman Morgan Bojorquez plated runs in a three run bottom of the fifth, putting the Cards up 5-3. Shortstop Adam Haley reached on an error to lead off, and scored after Gatti's single to right was mishandled, putting Gatti on third. Budak then doubled home Gatti, and scored on the double by Bojorquez.
Dufalt homered in the ninth to close the gap in the ninth, but Ring induced a flyout to right off the bat of first baseman Ed Tolzien to end the game. Redbird hurler Steve Hecker(2-1) picked up the loss, giving up five runs, four of which were earned on six hits and two walks.
Bojorquez, Gatti and Hook all had two hits for U of L, each extending hitting streaks to nine, eight and seven games respectively. Dufalt was 3 for 5 for the Redbirds.
In the second game of the day, Illinois topped West Virginia 4-3 in 11 innings. The Cardinals were scheduled to play games on Saturday and Sunday, but the threat of inclement weather on Sunday has moved the remaining games in the Louisville Baseball Cardinal Classic to Saturday. All games on Saturday will be seven-inning games at Cardinal Stadium. Illinois State will face West Virginia at 9:30 a.m., Louisville will then face West Virginia at 12:00 p.m.. Illinois and Illinois State will meet at 2:30 p.m., and Illinois and Louisville will wrap things up at 5:00 p.m.
