Rightfielder Dane Ball lead #15 Pepperdine with three hits and three RBI in a 6-4 victory over Louisville Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium and extend its season-opening winning streak to five games.
Wave(5-0) pitcher Eric Valenzuela pitched five effective innings to earn the win in his season debut and Greg Ramirez worked four innings of relief to register his second save of the year.
Louisville(0-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Pepperdine answered in the bottom half of the frame to score a pair of runs on a two-run single by Ball.
The Waves took a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Ball and a two-run double by centerfielder Woody Cliffords. Pepperdine's final run came on freshman left fielder Chris Kelly's first career home run in the fifth inning.
Louisville, which scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, was lead by center fielder Mike Hook, who went 3-for-3 and stole three bases, giving him 57 on his career. Sophomore shortstop Adam Haley was 2-for-4 and has hit safely in three straight games.
Right hander Mike Tisdale(0-1) made his first start of the season for the Cardinals and suffered the loss after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs, three walks and striking out one. Valenzuela allowed four hits, one earned run, walked five and struck out five. Ramirez surrendered four hits, two runs and struck out four.
The Cards travel to Hawaii, where they have a day off following four games in four days, before facing the University of Hawaii(3-3) in a four-game series beginning Thursday.
