The Louisville baseball team completed it's first four-game series sweep in 25 years by defeating the Detroit Titans 9-0 and 6-3 in a doubleheader Sunday in Louisville. Under Head Coach Jim Zerilla, who now serves as U of L's pitching coach, Louisville swept four from North Central College on March 27th and 28th in 1976.
Game One
Senior pitcher Denny Williams tossed a complete game four-hit shutout and junior third baseman Mike Budak was 2 for 3, driving in five runs, to lead Louisville to a 9-0 win in the first of two Sunday in Louisville.
Louisville struck first in the opening frame with two runs courtesy of a triple to center off the bat of Budak. The three-bagger scored sophomore leftfielder Dave Williams Jr., who lead off with a double, and senior centerfielder Mike Hook who had followed with a single.
Williams(1-2) struck out seven and walked two in his seven innings, and has now tossed 13 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Detroit's Bobby Lindsay(0-1) tossed three innings in the loss, giving up four runs on five hits and three walks.
With one out in the third, Hook walked, stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Budak and scored on a double by sophomore Morgan Bojorquez. Senior Bill Gatti Jr. followed with a double down the left field line to score Bojorquez, and increase the Cardinal lead to 4-0.
Williams Jr. doubled home senior Matt Jarboe who singled to open the fourth, to give the Cards a 5-0 advantage. Louisville added four more in the fifth when sophomore Adam Haley plated junior Fernando Isa, who singled to lead off and moved to third on ground ball outs, on a squeeze, and Budak hit a bases-loaded double for the final margin of 9-0. Hook scored three runs in the contest.
The Titans looked to get on the board in the sixth when rightfielder Tim Andrzejak, who had singled, tried to score on a base hit to right by first baseman Tim Poley, but Cardinal rightfielder Mark Jurich threw to Bojorquez who threw a strike to Isa for the third out of the inning.
Game Two
An inside-the-park home run by Bill Gatti Jr. in the fifth inning lifted the Cards to a 6-3 win over Detroit to complete the four-game weekend sweep in the second of two at Cardinal Stadium Sunday.
The Cards again opened the scoring on an RBI single by junior second baseman Scott Gerlach, scoring Williams Jr., after he singled and stole second. Louisville took a 3-0 lead on RBI singles by Haley and Hook. Hook stole his ninth base of the year in the second, giving him 63 for his career, passing Doug Ingrham for second on the career list at U of L.
Detroit tied things up at three in the fourth. Leftfielder Roger Wechter smoked a ground-rule double to the gap in left-center to lead off the inning, and DH Ryan Rumberger homered to right center. Catcher Mike Mitrevski followed with a single, and later scored on a base knock by second baseman Brian Wilson.
Gatti scored from third on an error with the bases loaded in the fourth to give the Cardinals a 4-3 lead, and followed with his homer in the fifth, his first of the season, driving in freshman catcher Carlos De la Osa who had doubled to make it 6-3.
Senior Antonio Castellvi(1-0) tossed 2.1 perfect innings, striking out four to pick up the win. Josh Ring struck out two in the one-two-three seventh to pick up his third save of the season.
The Titans' Omar Diaz(0-1) entered in the third, and picked up the loss, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on three hits and two walks. Rumberger was 2 for 3, driving in two runs.
Detroit stands 0-4 on the season, while Louisville improved to 5-6 on the season.
