
Cardinal Nine Signs Seven

LOUISVILLE, KY. -Seven athletes have signed a national letter-of-intent to continue their baseball playing careers at the University of Louisville. Four of the prospects currently play for Louisville area high schools.
"We wanted to address some needs at the infield positions and, as always, add some arms to the roster," said Head Coach Lelo Prado.
"We are very happy with the individuals we have called upon to fit those needs, and we're especially pleased to keep some of the top prospects from the state of Kentucky here in Louisville."
The class includes six high school seniors and one junior college transfer. They will be eligible for the 2002 Major League Draft, and will be available to enroll at Louisville in the fall of 2002.
Louisville had a 32-29 record for the 2001 season, an improvement of 15 wins over the 2000 total, which is the fifth-best single season improvement by Division One colleges last season.
Brandon "Boomer" Whiting SS/2B S/R 5'11" 170 New Wilmington, PA New Wilmington HS A two sport star for the Greyhounds, rushing for 1,497 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior halfback. Has excellent speed and can play either middle infield position.
Brian Halford RHP R/R 6'0" 170 Louisville, KY Eastern HS One of the top pitchers in the area with a high upside. Will need to develop more physically, but will make early contributions as a starter or reliever.
Greg Taylor INF R/R 6'0" 180 Springfield, IL St. Louis CC at Forest Park Tabbed in the 42nd round of the 2001 Major League Baseball draft by the Yankees, Taylor hit .343 with 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 43 RBI and was 11-14 on steals, helping his team to a District I championship last season. Earned All-State honors as a senior in high school. Can play all infield positions.
Jonathan Harbridge RHP R/R 6'3" 180 Orilla, Ontario Orilla CVI Pitched in the Canadian national tournament, and lead his team to the Ontario championship.
Nick Haley 2B L/R 5'10" 170 Louisville, KY Pleasure Ridge Park HS Brother of current Cardinal Adam Haley. Plays for perennial state power PRP where he has participated in postseason play each of the past three seasons.
Jason Payton C R/R 6'3" 220 Louisville, KY Pleasure Ridge Park HS Another PRP product who has excellent power, and may see playing time early behind the plate.
Skylar Meade LHP L/L 6'0" 170 Louisville, KY Ballard HS Has played the outfield in addition to his pitching duties at Ballard. A crafty lefty with three solid pitches.
