LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Four athletes with ties to the University of Louisville baseball team were selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft this week.
Junior right-handed pitcher Sean Green was drafted in the 12th round by the Colorado Rockies. Senior righty Brian Bentley, U of L's all-time leader in wins, strikeouts and starts, was picked up by the Boston Red Sox in the 20th round. Louisville signee and left-handed pitcher Chad Petty went to the Detroit Tigers with the 48th pick overall and fellow signee outfielder Justin Woodrow was tabbed by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 6th round. Petty and Woodrow both signed letters of intent to play for U of L next fall.
Green, who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays following his senior year at Male High School, has one year of college eligibility remaining if he chooses not to sign with the Rockies.
Bentley, a graduate of St. Xavier high school, wrapped up his career at U of L with a school-record 22 wins, 243 strikeouts and 45 starts, while tossing 308.1 innings, one inning short of the all-time record.
Petty, who attended Chalker High School in West Farmington, Ohio, is generally considered the top prospect in the state. Woodrow is described as a five tool player by Collegiate Baseball.
Last year U of L lost junior catcher James McAuley and high school signees Mike Davis and Jorge Maduro to the draft.
Petty and Woodrow have the option of signing a contract with their respective teams or enrolling at U of L next fall and playing for the Cards. Their draft status does not effect their eligibility, and they will be eligible to be drafted following their junior and senior years of college.
