LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A six-run second and a 12-run third propelled Memphis to a 21-14 victory Sunday afternoon, to take the weekend series two games to one.
The third frame set or tied four school records for the Tigers, including at-bats (13), runs (12), hits (10) and plate appearances (17) in an inning. The 12 runs allowed equals the U of L record in a single inning by an opponent, set on May 5, 1993 against Dayton in a 23-11 loss.
Memphis middle infielders Stephen Frix and Daniel Uggla combined to go 4-for-11, driving in nine runs and scoring four. Each of the nine regulars for UM scored a run in the disastrous third.
Sean Carlson (1-2), the fifth and final pitcher for the Tigers, struck out two and gave up only one hit in 1.2 innings to pick up the win. Sean Green (0-6) started for the Cards and picked up the loss. He was hit hard for the second consecutive Sunday start, surrendering nine runs, seven earned, on five hits, a walk and three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Louisville used seven pitchers in the game, including four in the third.
The Cards managed to push across four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to cut the lead to 18-10, but third baseman Kyle Rajsich struck out with the bases loaded in the sixth to end the rally.
Louisville native Robby Williams was 4-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a double and his second homer of the season. Outfielder Paul Brown was 3-for-4, scoring four times, driving in three and walking twice. Catcher Tony Taylor cracked his third homer of the season, a solo shot in the sixth.
The Cardinals will host two mid-week games this week, on Tuesday against Morehead State and Wednesday against Xavier. Both games will start at 6:00 at Cardinal Stadium.
