CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay outslugged Louisville Tuesday night en route to an 11-8 victory to sweep the 2000 home-and-home series. In the loss, rightfielder Paul Brown extended his season-high hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the seventh.
Five starters for APSU (25-24) drove in two or more runs, and four had multi-hit games. Leadoff man Ben Fuller was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs.
Louisville (15-31-1) also had five players with multi-hit games, led by shortstop Scott Kohler who was 4-for-6, scoring two and driving in two. Louisville's three through six hitters drove in all eight runs. Designated hitter Kevin Martinez had his first home run of the season, and leftfielder Troy Hilpp hit his third on the year.
APSU reliever Gunnar Tatum (1-3) picked up his first win on the year, surrendering two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings. U of L's Carlos Fernandez (1-1) took the loss.
The Cards started things out in the first with a two-out solo home run by first baseman Curtis Sapp, his sixth of the year, and an RBI double by Martinez for a 2-0 lead, but U of L starter Mike Eilers failed to retire a batter, giving up four runs on three hits and three walks to the Governors. Fernandez induced a 6-4-3 double play on his first pitch out of the bullpen, and retired the next batter to get the Cards out of the inning down 4-2.
A bases-loaded walk to Sapp in the second got a run back for Louisville, but back-to-back doubles by the Govs in the bottom of the frame placed the lead back at two runs 5-3.
After a single run by the Govs in the third, Louisville scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at six, but APSU answered with a four spot in the fifth to take the lead for good 10-6.
Louisville tallied two in the top of the sixth, but could score no more as the Governors secured an insurance run in the seventh to close the scoring at 11-8.
Louisville travels to face nationally ranked Houston for a three-game weekend conference series beginning Friday.
