LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Kent State pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth inning to hand the University of Louisville baseball team an 8-7 loss Friday at Cardinal Stadium. The loss drops U of L to 1-9 overall while Kent improves to 3-1 on the young campaign.
With the Cardinals leading 6-5 entering the top of the eighth, U of L went to its bullpen in relief of starter Brian Bentley.
Eventual loser Brad Mattingly (1-3) gave up a leadoff single to 2B Andy Bechard then hit C Andy Marconi. RF Dave Mattle followed with a double just inside the first base bag to drive in Bechard and tie the score.
Shawn Hoover relieved Mattingly and allowed a sacrifice fly to DH Ty Carpenter to make the score 7-6. Following a passed ball and a walk, former Cardinal Chris Detweiler singled to center to close the Kent scoring.
U of L pulled to within one in the ninth on a RBI single by 3B Scott Kohler but with one out and two on Cardinal DH Morgan Bojorquez grounded into a game-ending double play.
Dirk Hayhurst (1-0) got the win after three innings of shutout relief while third-team All-America reliever Dan Adams picked up his first save of the season.
PRP alum Troy Hilpp paced the Cardinal offense with three hits while Bojorquez drove in a pair of runs.
U of L returns to the diamond Saturday with a pair of contests. The Cardinals take on Northern Iowa at 2:00 before a 5:00 p.m. rematch with Kent.
