Harold Adams went out for the basketball team his freshman year and was making progress until he suffered an attack of mononucleosis and was confined to his bed for several months. When he came back to school, he took on the task of assisting Hall of Fame coach John Dromo with the freshmen team and became a valuable part of the coaching staff. His first season working with the freshmen squad included names like Wade Houston, Eddie Whitehead, and Sam Smith. Each season, he gradually took on more and more responsibilities.
During his time with the team, Adams' help enabled Dromo to spend more time recruiting during the vital part of the high school season. He even entered the recruiting phase of the game and was a vital influence in the persuasion of Jim Shelton to attend UofL and play freshman basketball in 1965.
