Debbie Bell is entering her 10th season at the University of Louisville. She was named Assistant Coach/Operations Coordinator in July 2023 after spending six years as the program’s director of operations.

Most recently, the 2025 campaign saw Louisville serve as the host site for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship. The Cardinals earned the No. 8 seed in the tournament with a thrilling 3-2 victory over ninth-ranked Syracuse in the final game of the regular season. They went on to face No. 1 North Carolina and took an early lead, ultimately falling 2-1 in the first round of the tournament. Louisville closed the season with an 8-10 overall record and a 2-6 mark in league play with two of those losses coming in double overtime.

Following the season, three Cardinals: Izzy Bianco, Lauren Masters and Annabel Sep earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-West Region honors. Sep represented Louisville on the all-ACC second team.

The rebuilding effort began in 2024 when the Cards finished with a 6-11 overall record following the graduation of seven players. Aimee Plumb earned her third NFHCA All-America honor and was selected to the NFHCA All-West Region team along with Izzy Bianco..

In 2023, Bell helped guide the Cardinals to a 15-7 overall record and their fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, reaching the quarterfinals for the third time in the last five years. Louisville also went 3-3 in ACC play and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Cards finished the season at No. 10 in the NFHCA Coaches' poll after spending 10 weeks ranked among the nation's the top 10, reaching as high as No. 4. Louisville also boasted one of the top defensive units in the nation, standing second in the ACC and fifth in the NCAA with a 1.08 team goals against average at the end of the season. Graduate transfer goalkeeper Merlijn van der Vegt earned NFHCA All-West Region honors and was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team.

At the conclusion of the 2023 campaign, Mia Duchars and Julie Kouijzer earned NFHCA All-America honors, marking the ninth straight year the Cardinals placed at least two players on the All-America teams, a streak which dated back to the 2015 season. Louisville also matched a program-record with seven NFHCA All-West Region honorees as Aimee Plumb, Minna Tremonti, Emilia Kaczmarczyk and India Reed joined Kouijzer on the all-region teams.

Prior to her time in Louisville, Louisville, Bell spent two years (2015 and 2016) as an assistant field hockey coach at Columbia University. While helping guide the Lions during game days and practice, she also assisted with the organization of fundraising, alumnae relations, marketing efforts and game analysis.

Bell joined Columbia after a two-year stint at Manhattanville College where she served as an assistant coach from 2013 to 2015. While there, she worked primarily with the forward line and helped the Valiants produce one of the top offenses in the country. In addition to her on-field coaching duties, Bell was also the recruiting coordinator and film analyst for the program.

Along with her collegiate staff roles, Bell has also worked with USA Field Hockey Futures Program since 2009. Previously, she has had coaching stints at Rye High School, Bates College and her alma mater, Kent State.

Bell played for Kent State from 2008 through 2011 and still owns the school’s career records for goals (97) and points (215). She was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America third team in 2010, was two-time NFHCA All-West Region selection (2009 and 2010) and earned All-Mid-American Conference first team honors three times (2008, 2009, 2010). She was inducted into the Kent State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

The Hamilton, New Zealand native graduated from Kent State in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Human Movement. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Sport Business Management from Manhattanville College in 2015.

Bell and her wife Amy reside in Louisville with their two children.
