2011 First Team All-BIG EAST

Career: Completed career at Louisville with a 24-8 record on the mound in three collegiate seasons with a 2.77 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 279.1 innings pitched. Departs the program ranked second in career wins and ERA, third in strikeouts, tied for fourth in starts (41) and sixth in innings pitched.

2012: Earned Louisville Slugger All-America honors, was BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and earned First Team All-BIG EAST accolades. Finished 9-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 105 strikeouts in 16 starts and 109.0 innings pitchd. In final career start as a Cardinal, pitched 6.0 quality innings allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts to earn the victory in the Louisville's opening round win over New Mexico State at the NCAA Regional in Tucson. Selected as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week for the second time in three weeks after working 7.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts and only three hits to earn eighth win of the season on May 11 against St. John's. Struck out a career-high 10 and allowed only one run on two hits in an 8.0-inning no-decision at WVU on May 5. Named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on April 30 after dominant performance in win over UConn on April 27. Pitched 7.0 shutout innings allowing only four hits with six strikeouts to earn his seventh win of the season in the triumph against the Huskies. Lost for the first time since early March after allowing three runs on a season-high seven hits against Seton Hall on April 13. Won his fifth straight start and improved to 6-2 overall after allowing one earned run on three hits with eight strikeouts in 7.0+ innings at Georgetown on April 5. Earned his fourth straight win while striking out nine for the third straight outing during 7.0 innings of one-hit baseball against Villanova on March 30. Won his third straight start matching a career-high with nine strikeouts and allowed only one run in 7.0 innings against Cincinnati on March 23. Matched a season-high with 7.2 innings of work allowing only one earned run with career-best nine strikeouts in win over Ball State on March 16 for his third victory of the season. Pitched a season-long 7.2 innings allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts to earn his second win of the season in Cards' victory over Oral Roberts. Was saddled with his second loss of the season while allowing just three hits and three runs on six strikeouts in 7.0 innings against Pepperdine on March 3. Earned his first win of the season with 7.0 quality innings against Oakland on Feb. 24 when he allowed two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Took the loss in the opening day start against Minnesota as he allowed three earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings.

Summer 2011: Finished with a 3-1 record, a 1.76 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched and seven starts while be selected as an All-Star for the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod League.

2011: Selected in the 39th Round (1195th overall) of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. Earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors while going 10-2 with a 2.31 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 15 starts and 105.0 innings pitched. Picked up 10th win of the season in Cards' 5-3 victory over Cincinnati after allowing three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched. Improved to 9-2 on the season with a win over Notre Dame on May 20 after allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Lost second straight game after giving up career highs in runs (seven), earned runs (six) and hits (11) in 6.1 innings at No. 15 Connecticut on May 14. Suffered first loss of the season despite allowing only one run in a career-best 8.2 innings pitched at Seton Hall on May 6. Earned eighth win of the season on April 30 against Georgetown while finishing with seven strikeouts. Improved to 7-0 on the season on April 22 against USF after allowing two runs on six hits with career-best eight strikeouts. Had a no-hitter into the seventh at St. John's on April 16 but finished with a no-decision after allowing two earned runs and three total runs in 7.1 innings. Finished with a no-decision on April 9 at Cincinnati after allowing two earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 6.2 innings. Picked up his sixth win of the season on April 2 against WVU after allowing two runs on seven hits in 7.0 innings. Improved to 5-0 with the win against Rutgers on March 26 after matching a career-high with seven strikeouts while allowing one earned run on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Continued his strong start to the season with career-best seven strikeouts in 7.0 shutout innings to earn his fourth win of the season and extend his scoreless streak to 15.0 innings. Gave up only three hits with three strikeouts in a career-best 8.0 innings of shutout baseball to earn his third win of the season on March 12 at Pepperdine. Allowed only one run on just one hit with four strikeouts in 7.0+ innings to earn the win against Kent State on March 5 and improve to 2-0 on the season. Allowed just one run, his first of the season, on five hits with season-high five strikeouts in a 6.0-inning no-decision against Toledo on Feb. 26. Opened season with best performance of his career throwing career-best 7.2 innings of shutout baseball with four strikeouts and just four hits allowed to earn the win against Ohio State at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge. In two career starts against OSU, he has not allowed a run in 12.2 innings and is 2-0 overall.

2010: Closed the season with a 5-2 record overall and a 4.27 ERA after moving into the weekend rotation in May. Had 55 strikeouts in 65.1 innings of work and made 20 total appearances on the mound, including 10 starts. Allowed four runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 4.2 innings to take the loss in the Cardinals' 7-0 defeat against Vanderbilt at the NCAA Regional on June 6. Finished with a no-decision despite an outstanding performance against USF in the BIG EAST Tournament when he allowed just one earned run on eight hits with five strikeouts in career-long 7.0 innings. Won his fourth straight start while matching a career high with six strikeouts in 6.0 shutout innings with just four hits allowed in the Cardinals' BIG EAST title-clinching win at Notre Dame on May 22. Improved to 4-1 on the season after allowing three runs on four hits in 5.2 innings to earn the win against St. John's on May 16. Making his second start of the week, he pitched a career-best 6.0 scoreless innings, scattering five hits with four strikeouts to earn the win on May 9 at Georgetown. Worked 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only four hits to earn his second win of the season in the Cards' 6-0 victory at Ohio State on May 4. Allowed two runs on one hit in less than an inning of relief against UK on April 28. Came out of the bullpen to allow three runs on three hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief against Seton Hall on April 25. Returned to action in impressive fashion with 3.0 scoreless innings with only two hits allowed and four strikeouts to earn his first career win in the Cardinals' April 21 triumph over WKU. Served a four-game suspension from April 11-17 for intentionally hitting a batter on April 10. Pitched less than an inning of relief at Pittsburgh on April 10, when he was ejected by home plate umpire John Bennett for intentionally hitting Panthers catcher Kevan Smith with a 2-2 pitch in the eighth inning. Came out of the bullpen to allow one run on one hit with two strikeouts to take the loss at UK. Gave up two runs on three hits in 2.0 innings in third start of the season on March 30 at IU. Made second start on March 23 at Evansville and gave up four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Allowed only one run on four hits with three strikeouts in 4.0 innings at Ole Miss on March 13. Had a career-best six strikeouts while allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings in first career start against Indiana on March 9. Pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout against Evansville on March 3. Allowed the first two runs of his career on three hits in 1.0 inning against Minnesota on Feb. 28. Came out of the bullpen to pitch a career-best 4.0 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed in the Cards' win over Morehead State. Made first career appearance with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, including two strikeouts in Cardinals' 13-1 season-opening win over Bowling Green on Feb. 19.

2009: Redshirted in his first season with the Louisville baseball program. 2008-09 BIG EAST Academic All-Star.

High School: Earned two letters while playing for coach John Jefferson at St. Xavier High School. Earned First Team All-State, All-Region and All-District honors for the Tigers. Was 7-1 with a 1.55 ERA and 50 strikeouts as a senior and was 6-3 with a 2.09 ERA and 45 strikeouts during his junior season. Led St. X to a second-place finish in the 7th Region in 2008. Was named Team MVP as a senior. Had a 27-inning scoreless streak on the mound in 2008.

Personal: Born Justin Keith Amlung on May 21, 1990, in Louisville, Ky. Son of Dave and Sandy Amlung. Has an older sister, Bethany, and an older brother, Damon. Majoring in chemical engineering. Biggest thrill in sports was shutting out No. 1-ranked Pleasure Ridge Park for nine innings and holding Kentucky Mr. Baseball winner Zach Cox to 0-for-3 at the plate with a strikeout looking. Attended same high school as former Major League pitcher Paul Byrd. After graduation, he wants to attend graduate school to earn a degree in architecture. Person with the greatest influence on his career is his brother, who threw with him and gave him the arm he has today. Hobbies and outside interests include playing golf, video games, camping and kayaking. Favorite movie is Dumb & Dumber, while his favorite TV show is Man vs. Wild. Favorite athlete is Barry Larkin. Favorite cereal is Frosted Flakes, while his favorite candy bar is Milky Way. Favorite food is ice cream. Favorite teams are the Cincinnati Reds and Tennessee Titans. Favorite restaurant is Qdoba. He enjoys listening to rock and country music. His favorite quote is "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded," by Yogi Berra. If he could have dinner and play golf with three people, it would be Tiger Woods, Nolan Ryan and Barry Bonds. Something people probably don't know about him is that at 10 years old, he considered quitting baseball to focus on golf. Best athlete he ever faced was 2008 MLB first-round draft pick Eric Hosmer.
