Louisville Sweeps Series With Third Run-Rule Victory Over Pitt
April 19, 2026 | Softball
Bri Despines recorded her first career grand slam, giving her five RBI on the day.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team defeated Pittsburgh 14-0 in five innings to finish out the weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. Louisville (38-9, 13-5 ACC) completed all three games of the weekend in run-rule fashion.
Madison Pickens went 1-for-3 with three RBIs on the day to become the Louisville record holder for most RBIs in a single season. Bri Despines led the offense with a 3-for-3 showing and five RBIs, including four on her first career grand slam. Camryn Lookadoo also went 3-for-3, knocking three doubles, scoring twice and bringing in two runners. Alyssa Zabala (12-4) picked up the win after tossing 3.0 innings and allowing just two hits. Anna Wise and Jayden Gohs combined for the final two innings, with neither pitcher giving up a hit and Wise fanning two batters.
The Cards struck early with a four-run top of the first that started with Chelsea Mack and Easton Lotus getting on base to start the inning. Despines then singled up the middle to plate Mack before Lookadoo doubled in Lotus and an error on the play sent Despines home. Pickens grounded out to score Lookadoo and finish out the inning for UofL.
Both teams went three up, three down in the second, but Louisville opened the game up with a nine-run third inning. 14 different Cardinals stepped up to the plate, with Lookadoo starting the scoring with a double that brought in Lotus. Pickens grabbed her 61st and 62nd RBIs of the year on a single that plated Despines and Lookadoo.
With the bases loaded, Katie Thatcher was hit by a pitch and Mack was walked to score another two runs for UofL. Lotus came around a second time and marked the second out of the inning, but Despines cleared the bases with her grand slam to put Louisville up 13-0 at the end of the inning.
Jordan Williams was brought in by Taylor Monroe in the home half of the fourth to put the 14th run on the scoreboard. Pitt had a runner on third in the top of the fifth, but Gohs forced three straight outs to end the game.
Louisville will be back at Ulmer Stadium on Wednesday, April 22, when it welcomes Kentucky for the second installment of the Battle of the Bluegrass. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ACCNX.
