
Cards Split Day One of Felsberg Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. -Â The University of Louisville softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Felsberg Invitational, grabbing a 7-4 win over Stony Brook before falling 7-5 to tournament host FIU.
Across both games, sophomore Madison Pickens went 4-for-8 with two triples and a home run. Pickens scored three of the Cards' runs and added two RBIs. Sophomore Riley Janda and senior Bri Despines each launched homers of their own, with Janda's coming against SBU and Despines' coming against FIU.
Junior Brooke Gray took the win in the circle against the Seawolves, tossing 4.0 innings with three strikeouts and allowing just one run. Madi Reeves, Anna Wise and Jayden Gohs each made their Louisville debuts on Friday. Reeves totaled 2.0 innings with one strikeout versus Stony Brook, and Wise and Gohs combined for 6.0 innings in the matchup with the Panthers. Wise took the loss in the night game, but pitched 5.2 innings of relief, striking out two and allowing just one earned run.Â
Stony Brook scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, but Louisville had an immediate answer. Camryn Lookadoo led off the third with a double, and a sacrifice bunt from Mack put her at third. A triple from Pickens scored Lookadoo before an error allowed Pickens to come home for the second run. Despines singled to keep the inning going, and Janda knocked her second career home run to give the Cards an early 4-1 lead.
Taylor Monroe started the top of the sixth off with a single and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Wise was walked and Lookadoo entered as a pinch runner, before both runners advanced on a passed ball. A single from Easton Lotus scored Monroe and moved Lookadoo to third. A wild pitch allowed Lookadoo to score and put UofL up 7-1.Â
The Seawolves added on three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Ryann Sanders closed out the Louisville win.
Game two started with back-to-back homers from Pickens and Despines as the Cards jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. FIU answered with a three-run home half of the inning.
Wise and Panthers pitcher Meagan Villazon dominated the next three innings before Wise drew a walk to begin the top of the fifth. Jordan Williams pinch ran for Wise and moved to second on a fielder's choice. Lookadoo doubled to send Williams home and even the score at 3-all. Wise re-entered to pitch a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning.
A four-run sixth inning saw FIU take a commanding 7-3 lead. A bunt from Chelsea Mack and an error by the Panthers scored Lookadoo and Katie Thatcher in the top of the seventh to shrink the deficit to two, but a lineout quickly ended the game for UofL.Â
Louisville returns to action tomorrow morning for a pair of games, facing Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 11:30 a.m. and Lehigh at approximately 4:30 p.m.
