Cards overome a six-goal deficit in the second half, but fall 11-10 to Ohio State in double OT
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A late game Louisville scoring run came up short as Ohio State's Kate Tyack's goal with 48 seconds left in double overtime lifted the Buckeyes to an 11-10 win in the Cardinals' season opener Tuesday afternoon at UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
Â
"I thought today was a fantastic lacrosse game, we battled for 60 minutes," said UofL head coach Scott Teeter. "Our start probably wasn't the greatest on the draw circle, and I thought Ohio State won that battle pretty easily at the start. We challenged the girls at halftime to come in and just keep playing. Defensively, I thought for the most part [the effort] was pretty rock-solid; they played as one and played as a unit. Offensively it was a little rougher earlier on, but then we figured it out, and they stuck together and kept playing."
Â
After trailing 10-4 in the third quarter, the Cardinals (0-1) scored six unanswered goals, including five in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Reese Whiteman and Charlotte Jackson each had a hat trick to help lead the Cardinals offensively and goalie Haley Richards collected 16 saves in her first collegiate start.
Â
Ohio State (1-1) opened the scoring four minutes into the contest with a goal by Brooke Vinson and Zoe Coleman struck a minute later to make the score 2-0.
Â
Whiteman, the Cardinals' leading scorer last season, put Louisville on the scoreboard with just under three minutes remaining in the opening frame. The Buckeyes countered with a pair of goals to end the quarter with a 4-1 lead.
Â
Early in the second quarter, Jackson connected on a feed from Grayce Kitchen as the Cards cut the lead in half, but Ohio State responded with Coleman's third goal of the game. Jackson delivered again five minutes later to make the score 5-3, but the Buckeyes' Kate Tyack tacked on two more goals to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
Â
In the first half, Ohio State held an 11-1 advantage in draw controls and a 10-5 edge in shots on goal with Richards and Ohio State goalie Jocelyn Torres collecting five saves apiece. Â
Â
Coming out of the break, Ohio State added two more goals, pushing the score to 9-3. After Whiteman notched her second goal of the game to pull the Cards within five, the Buckeyes countered with another goal by Tyack to take a 10-4 lead with 5:06 left to play in the third quarter. Louisville then opened a 6-0 scoring run starting with Maggie McMahon's first goal of the season courtesy of an assist from Rian Adkins to close out the frame.
Â
The run continued in the fourth quarter which featured five Cardinal goals and a solid defensive effort to hold the Buckeyes scoreless with five stops by Richards.
Â
Ella Berg registered her first goal of the season just 50 seconds into the quarter. Adkins then connected on a pass from McMahon and Whiteman went on to complete her hat trick, pulling the Cards within two. Erin Nicholson kept the run alive to make the score 10-9 with 8:56 remaining in regulation.
Â
Ohio State went on to rattle off three shots on goal over the next five minutes, but Richards was there for the stop each time. The Cards broke through again, this time it was Jackson completing her first collegiate hat trick to tie the game at 10-10.
Â
The Buckeyes delivered two more shots on goal, both turned back by Richards in the closing minutes of regulation.
Â
The contest entered the first of two sudden-victory overtime periods which saw Ohio State own a 6-0 advantage in shots with Richards picking up a pair of saves, but with the score still knotted at 10-10, the teams went to a second overtime.
Â
Louisville threatened first in the second OT with Jocelyn Torres turning back Adkins' shot. Richards stopped another Ohio State attempt, but the Buckeyes eventually prevailed on Tyack's free position goal with 48 seconds left on the clock.
Â
In the game, Ohio State held a 39-31 edge in shots, led 23-15 in shots on goal and finished with an 18-8 advantage in draw control wins. Tyack paced the Buckeyes with four goals and Coleman finished with three.
Â
Louisville held a 16-13 edge in ground balls with Berg collecting a team high five. Karli Kirchenheiter and Cate Kangas forced three turnovers each.
Â
Louisville will return to action on Saturday when the Cardinals open Atlantic Coast Conference play at Virginia Tech. The game is slated for an 11 a.m. start and will air on ACC Network Extra.
