Cards Upset No.1 Stanford in Shutout Fashion
September 05, 2025 | Men's Soccer
Louisville has yet to allow a goal this season.
LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team (4-0-0, 1-0-0 ACC) pulled off the upset taking down No. 1 ranked Stanford (4-1-0, 0-1-0 ACC), Friday afternoon inside Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The last time the Cards beat the No. 1 team in the country was in April 2021, when they took down top-ranked Clemson 2-1 inside Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals continued their remarkable defensive start to the 2025 season, posting their fourth consecutive shutout and extending their streak of not conceding a goal through the first four matches. Anchored by a resilient back line and redshirt junior goalkeeper Alex Svetanoff, Louisville has now blanked all four of its opponents — a feat not accomplished by the program since 1998.
Redshirt sophomore Chase Vazquez scored his second goal of the season in the contest with an assist from Jack Boring, his first of the season. Svetanoff recorded his 100th career save during the match to preserve another clean sheet on the season.
Vazquez, assisted by Boring in the 21st minute of the match, would sneak a goal by the Stanford keeper and that would prove to be all the scoring the Cards would need to secure a victory.
Svetanoff was pivotal in the Cards victory, tacking on two saves in the first half. He then recorded another two saves in the second half, none more crucial than the one he would get in the 78th minute. With Stanford on the advantage, Svetanoff would make a vertical acrobatic save to deny what would have been the game-tying goal.
The Cards will be in back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 9, when they head on the road to play at Ohio State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Big Ten Network +.
