No. 6 Cardinals Sweep Boston College in ACC Opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 6-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team swept Boston College for its first Atlantic Coast Conference win of the season on Friday night inside L&N Federal Credit Union Arena. UofL won the match 25-12, 25-17, 25-15.
The Cards served seven aces on the night: three from setter/libero Hannah Kenny, two from setter Molly Wilson, and one each from libero Kamden Schrand and serving specialist Ava Utterback. Outside hitter Payton Petersen led the offense with a .524 hitting percentage on 13 kills, four digs and a block. Middle blocker Hannah Sherman led the defense with five blocks in addition to three kills. Outside hitter Alanna Bankston came off the bench to knock down two kills and stuff a solo block to finish the match. Setter Nayelis Cabello added 35 assists and three kills on three attempts.
Louisville held BC to a .049 clip with just 19 kills, 25 digs, eight blocks and three aces. Outside hitters Anna Herrington and Sequoia Layne each posted five kills while three different players stuffed two blocks.Â
UofL will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 28, to take on Syracuse inside L&N Arena. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.Â
Set 1: Boston College 12, Louisville 25
Kalyssa Blackshear led with four kills through the Cards' first 15 points as Louisville led by seven at the media timeout. Louisville extended its lead by two before BC used up its first timeout, down 17-8. UofL continued to dominate as Hannah Kenny and Ava Utterback both served aces and Chicoine knocked down a kill to put the Cards at set point 24-12. An attack error by the Eagles sealed the set win for Louisville 25-12.
Set 2: Boston College 17, Louisville 25
Kamden Schrand served UofL's fourth ace to open the set before the Cards pulled out to a 10-5 lead, a run highlighted by two block connections between Blackshear and Sherman. After Boston College burned its first timeout, the teams traded points, with BC using a 5-0 scoring run to get back within four at 18-14. Louisville answered with kills from Sherman and Chicoine that saw the Eagles use their second timeout now down 21-15. Another block from Blackshear and Sherman gave UofL set point at 24-16. Boston College held off the set with a kill, but Petersen's 11th kill clinched the set 25-17.
Set 3: Boston College 15, Louisville 25
BC took its first lead of the match, going up 4-3, before the Cards went on a 4-0 scoring run to lead 7-4. Louisville jumped out to an 11-6 lead off of two kills from Cabello and an ace from Wilson to force the Eagles to use their first timeout. UofL continued on a 6-0 run that featured Wilson's second ace, but a kill from Boston College ended the run with the Cards ahead 14-7.
