No. 4 Cards Fall to No. 2 Texas in Five Setter

FT. WORTH, Texas -- Payton Petersen had 18 kills and Cara Cresse tied her school record with 14 blocks their efforts fell just short as the No. 4 University of Louisville fell 3-2 to No. 2 Texas Wednesday Night at the Shriners Children's Showdown at the Net in Ft. Worth Texas.

The Cards, who move to 4-1 for the season, fell 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-22, 16-14. UofL talled 20 blocks and six aces, hitting .144 as a team. Chloe Chicoine added 13 kills and a team-high 14 digs. Setter Nayelis Cabello had 38 assists, three kills and seven blocks. Kamden Schrand and Hannah Kenny both had 12 digs and two aces.

Texas was led by Pitt transfer Torrey Stafford, who had 20 kills and 18 digs. The Longhorns hit .153 as a team with 15 blocks and five aces.
The Cardinals head to Omaha tomorrow to play in the Bluejay Invitational and will face host Creighton on Friday followed by Northern Iowa and Rice.

Behind the strong serving ibero Kamden Schrand, Louisville jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a block by Kalyssa Blackshear and Cara Cresse and four Texas hitting errors. The Longhorns called time out to try to chill the hot start. Texas scored four of the next five points to pull within three at 8-5 and then pulled to within one at 11-10 on a kill by Cari Spears. The Longhorns took their first lead at 15-14 on a kill by Torrey Stafford. Texas was able to string three straight points together to take a 19-18 lead before Dan Meske called timeout to regroup. Â The Cardinals broke from the huddle and answered with three straight points on kills by Nayelis Cabello, Chloe Chicoine and Payton Petersen. Another kill by Stafford put UT up 23-22 and UofL used its final timeout of the set. Cara Cresse connected with Cabello to tie at 23 and an UT hitting error by Devin Kahahawai put Louisville at set point 24-23. After UT burned its last timeout, Cabello landed a setter dump to give the Cards the 25-23 win. U of L hit .292 with Petersen's seven kills pacing the Cardinal offense.

UofL pushed back but were not served by -.061 hitting and UT's Stafford's five kills made the difference as the Longhorns evened the set score at one apiece with the 25-16 win.

The Cardinals were down 8-4 and took their first lead at 10-9 on a kill by Chloe Chicoine. Texas tied at 11, and then took a 15-13 leading into the media timeout. Two consecutive aces by freshman Hannah Kenny brought the Cards back to take an 18-16 lead and force at UT timeout. UofL spread the lead to four on a kill by Cresse. A UT hitting error pushed the Cardinals to a 23-18 lead and the Longhorns used their final timeout. Ava Utterback zinged an ace by Texas to get to set point at 24-18. After scoring three straight to pull within three at 24-21, UofL used its first timeout. The Cards got a kill from Chicoine after Louisville had to challenge a touch call to gain set point and the 25-21 win.

In the fourth set, UofL fell behind 4-0 and was forced to call timeout. Coming out of the break, Kamden Schrand served seven straight points to give UofL a 7-4 lead and force a Texas timeout. Texas pushed back with a 6-1 run to go up 10-8. The Longhorns spread the lead to 16-12. The Cards scrambled back to within one on an ace by Chicoine at 18-17 but Texas answered with two straight points to go up 20-17 and force a Louisville timeout. The break worked as Louisville reeled off two straight to pull within one at 20-19 on a solo block by Cresse, who also scored twice  a pull within one at 23-22. Stafford connected for two straight kills that gave UT the 25-22 win to force a fifth set.

Payton Peterson scored after the timeout but then missed a serve to knot the score at 13. Cresse got her 14th block to push the Cards to set and match point at 14-13. Texas responded with two straight points to take the lead at 15-14 and Meske challenged unsuccessfully. Â The Longhorns won 16-14 on a kill by Abby Vander Wala.
