May 29, 2025 | Track & Field
The redshirt senior claimed the regional title with a program-record leap of 6.64m (21-9.5), while Kiyah Yeast advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals in the women’s 200m.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of Louisville women's track & field redshirt senior Synclair Savage punched her ticket to the national championship meet in the women's long jump to lead the Cardinals in their first day of competition at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Round on Thursday.
After missing the entirety of last season due to injury, Savage made her return to the regional meet count, clinching her third career berth to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after winning the women's long jump with a personal-best and program-record leap of 6.64m (21-9.5) that came on her third and final attempt of the competition.
The eye-popping mark bettered the previous school record of 6.53m (21-5.25) that Savage set during her junior season at the Texas Relays on April 1, 2023.
The Cards also saw success on the track as Kiyah Yeast advanced out of the first round in the women's 200m by finishing second in her heat after a lengthy weather delay with a time of 23.23. The redshirt senior will have the opportunity to move on to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event for the first time in her career in the 200m quarterfinals on Saturday at 7:50 p.m. ET.
In addition to advancing in the 200m, Yeast also stepped into the starting blocks in the women's 100m earlier in the day, placing 40th with a time of 11.49.
Along with Savage's NCAA-qualifying performance, Sophia Day also contested the women's long jump, placing 25th with a leap of 5.97m (19-7) to cap off her breakthrough season in the event. The sophomore will return to the runway on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. ET to take part in the women's triple jump.
In the men's pole vault, Ty McPhail cleared a final bar of 5.18m (17-0) to finish in a tie for 23rd in the region, while Lucas Couron tied for 32nd after posting a mark of 5.03m (16-6).
Noah Koch rounded out Thursday's competition for the Cardinals, recording a toss of 18.03m (59-2) to finish 24th in the men's shot put.
Due to rainy conditions, the women's pole vault was halted during attempts at the second bar of the competition and will resume tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. ET. In the early going of the competition, Ashley Callahan sits in a tie for first place after clearing 4.09m (13-5) on her first attempt while Iliana Triantafyllou ranks in a tie for 10th after clearing her first attempt at 3.94m (12-11) and missing her first try at 4.09m (13-5).
Additionally, the women's shot put will be moved to tomorrow with a 10:00 a.m. ET start time with Jayden Ulrich set to compete in the event.
