January 16, 2026 | Track & Field
The Cardinals won five events on the day, including Callahan’s record-breaking clearance of 4.48m (14-8.25) in the women’s pole vault.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track & field teams took part in the Bellarmine Open on Friday, winning five events and breaking yet another program record with Ashley Callahan leaping to the top of the record book in the women's pole vault.
In just the second indoor meet of her Louisville career, Callahan cleared a bar of 4.48m (14-8.25) that bettered the previous school record of 4.47m (14-8) that was set last February by Natalie Lark, set a new meet record, and leads the NCAA among marks entering the weekend.
Louisville also took the top spot in the men's pole vault as KJ Byrd picked up an event victory in his first appearance on the pole vault runway this season, clearing a bar of 5.10m (16-8.75).
The Cardinals picked up a pair of wins in the throws cage as well, with Demaria King winning the women's weight throw and Matt Giuliano following suit in the men's weight throw.
King posted a massive personal record with a toss of 19.29m (63-3.5) to set a new Bellarmine Open meet record, while Giuliano set a Louisville freshman record in the weight throw for the second consecutive week, posting a mark of 18.90m (62-0.25) to move to eighth in program history and shatter the previous freshman record of 18.39m (60-4) that he set last weekend at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational.
Josiah Hortin rounded out the day's winners with a solid performance in the men's 800m, clocking a new personal-best time of 1:52.49 to distance himself from the field by nearly six seconds and move to seventh in program history.
Louisville Track & Field will be back in action next weekend when the squads split between the PNC Bank Bellarmine Classic in Louisville on Jan. 23 and the Crossroads of America Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. on Jan. 23-24.
