Cards Earn Trio of Event Victories on First Day of Split Weekend

Lauren Bettencourt (women’s 1500m), Ashley Callahan (women’s pole vault) and Jayden Ulrich (women’s discus throw) all took the top spots in their respective events.
The University of Louisville track & field teams began their second split weekend of the outdoor campaign on Friday, earning a trio of event victories while tallying 15 personal-best performances.

Ashley Callahan (women's pole vault) and Jayden Ulrich (women's discus throw) claimed the top spots in their respective events at the Jim Click Shootout & Multis, while Lauren Bettencourt broke the tape in the women's 1500m at the Jim Vargo Invitational.

JIM CLICK SHOOTOUT & MULTIS
At the Jim Click Shootout & Multis in Tucson, Ariz., Callahan earned her first event victory of the season in the women's pole vault, clearing a personal-best bar of 4.31m (14-1.75) to move up to third in program history.

The Cardinals also picked up a win in the women's discus throw, as Jayden Ulrich recorded a mark of 60.24m (197-7), two weeks after setting a new program record two weeks ago at the USF Alumni Invitational with a mark of 66.41m (217-0). Jade Whitfield also continued her stellar start to the outdoor campaign, recording a toss of 57.07m (187-3) to finish as the runner-up in the event.Â

Louisville's men's throwers also recorded a pair of solid performances on Friday as Ryan Drwal finished as the runner-up in the men's javelin throw with a mark of 57.35m (188-2), and Noah Koch placed fourth in the men's discus throw after recording a heave of 52.63m (172-8).

After the first five events of the men's decathlon, Paul Kallenberg and KJ Byrd sit first and second in the standings with respective totals of 4,119 and 3,975 points.

Making his first appearance in the decathlon since 2023, Kallenberg holds the lead at the halfway point of the event after recording three personal records with a 100m time of 10.96, a 400m time of 48.82, and a toss of 15.17m (49-9.25) in the shot put.

Byrd also got off to a solid start in his first decathlon at the collegiate level, notably recording a 100m time of 10.85, a clearance of 2.03m (6-8) in the high jump, and a mark of 7.09m (23-3.25) in the long jump.

The pair will get the final day of action started tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. ET with the 110m hurdles before closing the decathlon with the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500m.

Through four events in the women's heptathlon, Lucy Fellows sits in third place with 3,276 points to lead the Cardinals after posting personal records of 24.96 in the 200m, 1.66m 5-5.25) in the high jump, and 11.86m (38-11) in the shot put.

The final three events of the heptathlon will get underway with the long jump at 12:00 p.m. ET before wrapping up with the javelin throw and 800m.

Lauren Bettencourt earned the Cards' third event victory of the day in the women's 1500m at Bellarmine's Jim Vargo Invitational after racing to a personal-best time of 4:35.28. Ellie Maurer also clocked a personal-best of her own in the event with a time of 4:38.61 to place fourth.

On the men's side, JB Terrill fought to a heat win with a personal-best time of 3:55.58, while Jacob Puhalla also recorded a personal record to finish close behind Terrill in 3:56.43.Â

With expected inclement weather in the area, the remainder of the Jim Vargo Invitational has been canceled.

STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Five Cardinals are set to make their outdoor season debuts at the Stanford Invitational late Friday night and into Saturday morning.

Olivia Alessandrini and Layla Roebke will contest the women's 5000m, while Gustav Bendsen, Ian Kibiwot and Geoffrey Kirwa will toe the line in the men's 5000m.
