Cards Rewrite Record Books to Close Split Weekend
April 05, 2025 | Track & Field
Geoffrey Kirwa, Layla Roebke and Kiyah Yeast all set program records while Olivia Alessandrini, KJ Byrd and Kirwa each posted freshman records.
The University of Louisville track & field teams wrapped up the second and final day of their split weekend on Saturday, as the squads were represented at both the Jim Click Shootout & Multis and Stanford Invitational.
The Cardinals set three program records on the final day of competition with Geoffrey Kirwa, Layla Roebke and Kiyah Yeast all climbing to the top of the Louisville record books in their respective events. Three freshman records also fell with Olivia Alessandrini, KJ Byrd and Kirwa each posting marks that lead all newcomers in the Louisville record books.
Over the course of the three-meet split, the Cards totaled 28 personal-best performances while seeing 18 marks that currently rank among the top 10 marks in program history.
More detailed highlights from both meets can be found below.
JIM CLICK SHOOTOUT & MULTIS
The majority of the team closed out competition at the Jim Click Shootout & Multis in Tucson, Ariz. on Saturday, led by Kiyah Yeast who set a new Louisville program record in the women's 200m of 23.22 that lowered her own record of 23.41 that she ran two weeks ago at the USF Alumni Invitational.
In addition to her runner-up finish in the 200m, the graduate student placed fifth in the women's 100m after racing to a wind-aided time of 11.38.
After winning the women's discus throw on Friday, Jayden Ulrich doubled back with an event victory in the women's shot put, recording a toss of 18.52m (60-9.25) that would rank second in the NCAA entering the weekend.
The Cards also dominated the men's decathlon as Paul Kallenberg won the event by posting a personal-best point total of 7,772 points and KJ Byrd placed third with a new freshman record of 7,349 points to move the pair to second and third in program history, respectively.
Making his first appearance in the decathlon since the 2023 outdoor season, Kallenberg claimed the top spot in the competition while posting personal records in the 100m, 400m, shot put, and discus throw over the course of the weekend.
In his first decathlon at the collegiate level, Byrd broke Kallenberg's freshman record of 7,077 points that was set back in 2022 while also moving into the top 10 in school history in the 110m hurdles, pole vault and javelin throw.
Lucy Fellows led the way for the Cardinals in the women's heptathlon, finishing second with a personal-best point total of 5,538 points by notching personal-best marks in five of the seven events, moving her within 18 points of the program record of 5,556 points.
Maya Follmer and Aubrey Lane also made their collegiate heptathlon debuts with Follmer moving to eighth in program history with a total of 4,448 points and Lane advancing to ninth with 4,072 points.
In the men's pole vault, Lucas Couron vaulted to a personal-best clearance of 5.20m (17-0.75) to finish as the runner-up in the event while moving up to third in the Louisville record books.
Demaria King closed out the day in the field for the Cards, finishing third in the women's hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 54.74m (179-7).
On the track, the men's 4x100m relay team of Jaidyn Johnson, Jaylen Cole, Trevor Holbrook and Clarence McLean moved to fourth in school history with a season-best time of 40.43, while the women's 4x100m squad of Olivia Jenkins, Yeast, Ruby Nwosu and Maya Taylor finished just off their season-best with a 45.10.
STANFORD INVITATIONAL
The Cards also fielded a small group of distance runners at the Stanford Invitational, highlighted by three record-breaking performances in the women's 5000m and men's 5000m.
After redshirting the 2024 outdoor season, Layla Roebke made her Louisville debut on the outdoor oval count, clocking a personal-best time of 15:46.36 to shatter the previous program record of 16:03.95 that was set in 2018 by Dorcas Wasike.
Olivia Alessandrini also contested the women's 5000m at Stanford in her first collegiate outdoor meet, setting a new freshman record in the event with a time of 16:02.47 that lowered Wasike's previous program record that also stood as the freshman record.
On the men's side, freshman Geoffrey Kirwa also made his collegiate outdoor debut with a time of 13:30.83 that knocked ten seconds off the previous program record of 13:40.47 by Wesley Korir that had stood since 2007. Over the course of his young collegiate career on the track, the native of Kapsabet, Kenya has notched a pair of program records in the indoor mile and outdoor 5000m while also claiming four Louisville freshman records in the indoor mile, indoor 3000m, indoor 5000m and outdoor 5000m.
