Geoffrey Kirwa Clocks World-Leading Time in 3000m Steeplechase at Bryan Clay Invitational
April 17, 2025 | Track & Field
In addition to recording the fastest time in the world thus far in 2025, the freshman moved to second in NCAA history with a time of 8:13.89 that also set new program, ACC and meet records.
Geoffrey Kirwa posted a world-leading time in the 3000m steeplechase that also moves him up to second in NCAA history in the event as the University of Louisville track & field teams were represented at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Pacific Coast Invitational on Thursday.
In his first steeplechase appearance at the collegiate level, the freshman's time of 8:13.89 set a new meet record at the Bryan Clay Invitational by over 10 seconds, while also bettering the previous program record of 8:24.87 that was set by two-time NCAA champion Matt Hughes in 2011 and the previous ACC record of 8:20.68 that was set in 2024 by Nathan Mountain of Virginia.
After beginning his outdoor career on April 4 at the Stanford Invitational with a school-record 5000m time of 13:30.83, Kirwa now owns a trio of program records in the indoor mile, outdoor 5000m and outdoor 3000m steeplechase while also owning five Louisville freshman records in the indoor mile, indoor 3000m, indoor 5000m, outdoor 5000m and outdoor 3000m steeplechase.
More detailed information on both meets can be found below.
BRYAN CLAY INVITATIONAL
Along with Kirwa's record-breaking performance in the men's 3000m steeplechase, Layla Roebke set a school record of her own at the Bryan Clay Invitational, recording a time of 9:58.76 in the women's 3000m steeplechase that took over 17 seconds off the previous school record of 10:15.98 that was set in 2017 by Claire Noser.
Entering the week of competition, Roebke's time would rank as the second-fastest time in the ACC thus far this season and 12th in the NCAA.
The Cards were also well-represented in the women's 10000m as a pair of freshmen jumped into the top 10 in program history in their first collegiate appearances at the distance. Olivia Alessandrini moved to seventh in the Louisville record books with a time of 34:22.31, and Nancy Chepleting clocked a time of 34:37.05 to move to ninth.
On the men's side, Ian Kibiwot made his first appearance for the Cardinals since October 2024, finishing sixth in the second heat of the invitational section with a time of 29:00.71, giving him four of the 10 fastest times in the event in school history, including the program record that he set at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
In the men's 800m, JB Terrill knocked over two seconds off his previous personal record with a time of 1:52.23 that ranks the junior eighth in school history.
The third and final day of the Bryan Clay Invitational will feature Louisville athletes in both the men's and women's 1500m, while a small group of Louisville jumpers are slated to compete in the men's and women's high jump, women's long jump, and men's and women's triple jump.
PACIFIC COAST INVITATIONAL

Josh Moore closed out the day for the Cards in the men's high jump, finishing seventh with a final clearance of 2.02m (6-7.5) in his first outdoor meet in a Louisville uniform.
Jones, Moore and Williamson will all join the Louisville contingent at the Bryan Clay Invitational tomorrow as the trio will look to build off their solid performances from today.
