Cards Down Volunteers 3-2 in Spring Match

Chloe Chicoine notches four aces
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Reese Robins had 19 kil to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Tennessee in a spring matchup Saturday afternoon at Freedom Hall.

The Cards are now 3-0 in the spring contests with the 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-11 win.

In the first set, UofL used a 4-0 run to take a 9-5 lead before Tennessee's Paityn Chapman uncorked two consecutive aces which sparked a 4-0 Vol run to give Tennessee a 13-11 lead. Later in the set, Louisville newcomer Chloe Chicoine returned the favor with two straight aces of her own to put the Cardinals up 18-15 and spark a Tennessee timeout. The teams exchanged points until the Cards were able to string four straight points together to push the Cards to a 25-22 win.

The Cardinals dropped the second set 25-20. UofL had a 10-8 lead early but a 4-0 run by UT put the Vols ahead 12-10 and the Cards never led again. UofL did manage a 3-0 run to come within three at 23-20 after an Alanna Bankston block but were unable to capitalize on the spark and UT took the set.

Neither team could knit together a run with the biggest spread being three when UT had a 19-16 lead after two straight kills by Starr Williams. But the Cards came back to tie at 23 on a block by Cara Cresse. A kill by UT's Paiton Chapman took the Vols to set point at 24-23 and the Vols scored the winning point to take the set 25-23.

The fourth set mirrored the third as the teams traded points with Louisville's biggest lead coming at 21-19 on the heels of a Nayelis Cabello kill. The teams tied at 22 and an ace by Louisville gave the Cards set point and a kill by Chloe Chicoine put the Cards ahead for good at 25-23 and force a fifth set.

Louisville popped out to a 9-6 lead in the fifth but UT answered with three straight to tie at nine. After a Tennessee timeout at 10-9, UofL outscored the Vols 5-2 for the 15-11 win that came on a kill by Payton Petersen.

The Cards take on the Kentucky Wildcats next Friday, April 18 at 6 p.m. in L&N Arena.
