LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team drops game one of the series against No. 19/21 Duke on Friday evening with a 7-5 score. The Cardinals fall to 20-13 (3-7 ACC) this season.
UofL got off to a slow start after the Blue Devils scored four runs in the first. In the second inning, Brooke Gray pitched a zero to get the Cards back out on the field, but were unsuccessful in scoring any runs. Sam Booe entered the game in the third inning, allowing two runs and sending Lindsey Mullen into the circle.
After not being able to do much through the first three innings, the fourth inning was huge for UofL. Maddi Grant doubled to center field, a hit that seemed to light a fire under the Cards. The next play saw Easton Lotus hit a triple that sent Ally Alexander and pinch-runner Riley Janda home and get the Cards on the board.
Redshirt freshman Char Lorenz then singled through the left side which allowed Lotus to get home for her 44th RBI of the season. Once junior Bri Despines was up to bat, she hit the ball out of the park for the first homer of the game, bringing in two more runs for the Cards.
The score was 6-5 in Duke's favor to start the sixth. Louisville pitched a quick 1-2-3 inning to keep the score the same.
At the top of the seventh inning, Duke's J. Baker hit a homer bringing the score to 7-5, just out of reach for the Cards.
Brooke Gray fell to 5-5 on the season and Dani Drogemueller moved to 9-5.
The Cards will continue the series at Ulmer Stadium on Saturday and Sunday of this weekend. The first pitch on Saturday is slated for 2 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on the ACCN.
