
Louisville Prevails in 3-2 Victory Over WKU

The Cards are now 4-0 against in-state competition this season
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -Â The University of Louisville softball team earned a tightly contested 3-2 victory over Western Kentucky Tuesday evening. The Cardinals improve to 20-12 overall and 4-0 against in-state competition.Â

Junior Bri Despines led the offense with two hits, one RBI, and one run scored in four trips to the plate. Sophomore Jac Hasty also had a solid day at the plate, recording two hits in her first start of the season. Sophomore Brooke Gray earned the win in relief, pushing her record to 5-4.Â
UofL got the bats going early as Chelsea Mack earned her way on due to a bunt single down the third baseline. Mack then took second on a wild pitch, setting up an RBI opportunity for Char Lorenz who singled to center to earn her 43rd RBI of season. Despines kept the momentum going as she doubled to right center to score Lorenz, giving the Cards an early two run advantage in the game.

The Hilltoppers answered in the bottom half of the inning, using a leadoff double to set up the sacrifice fly by Maci Master to bring the score to 2-1.

After a hot start, both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth as WKU tied the game after a bases loaded walk. Brooke Gray came into pitch with the bases loaded and delivered back-to-back strikeouts to hold the Hilltoppers at bay.

Louisville quickly answered to start the sixth as Despines led off the inning with a bunt single. Madison Pickens moved Depines into scoring position off a sacrifice bunt to give the Cardinals a runner on second base with no outs. Hasty earned her second hit of the day after a single up the middle, setting up bases loaded. Despines broke the tie by scoring off a wild pitch, bringing the score to 3-2.Â

UofL will return home to Ulmer Stadium this weekend to begin a three-game series against No.19/21 Duke, with Friday's first pitch slated for 6 p.m. ET on ACCNX.
