Louisville falls to 2-4 in conference play
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville softball team lost their final game in the series against Virginia Tech (23-5) with a score of 12-5 on Sunday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The loss cuts UofL to 17-10 on the season, and Brooke Gray took the loss in the circle for a 4-4 record.
Ally Alexander and Maddi Grant both went 2-for-2 with two hits, and Camryn Lookadoo recorded two RBIs and a double in Sunday's game against the Hokies' Emma Mazzarone (5-2), who took home the win.
Cori McMillan got the scoring started for the Hokies, sending a early home run to give Virginia Tech a 1-0 lead. Michelle Chatfield followed up with the second consecutive longball of the inning, putting the Hokies up 2-0 by the end of the first.
After a quiet second frame, the Hokies came out blazing in the top of the third, blasting two solo shots and a two-run homer to give Virginia Tech a comfortable 6-0 lead over Louisville at the halfway point.
Grant and Alexander smacked two back-to-back singles for the Cards to kick off the bottom of the third. A groundout by Easton Lotus moved both runners into scoring position for Lookadoo, who knocked a stand-up double into center to put Louisville on the board, 6-2.
Virginia Tech threatened to score again in the top of the fourth, thanks to a fielding error, a single, a wild pitch, and a walk. But Cards righty Sam Booe secured a bases-loaded strikeout to escape the inning with no further damage done.
In the top of the fifth, the Hokies took advantage of a series of base hits to rack the tally up to 8-2. Virginia Tech then loaded the bases, but Booe once again recorded two consecutive strikeouts to bring the frame to a close.
Louisville mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth, gaining back a run. Grant and Alexander both walked, and Lotus singled to load the bases. Bri Despines drew another walk to send one home for the Cards and put the score at 8-3.
The Hokies attempted another scoring burst in the top of the sixth, getting two runners on thanks to a single and an error, but Booe turned a double play on a line drive to keep the score as is.
Virginia Tech tacked on two additional runs in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on several singles, a walk, and a double to make it 12-3.
After drawing a walk, Char Lorenz scored on a one-out homer from Despines in the bottom half of the final frame. Despite the late rally, Louisville was unable to get the job done, ultimately falling to the Hokies 12-5.
The Cards will be back in action on Tuesday, March 18 against Northern Kentucky with a standalone contest at 4:30 p.m. (E.T.) in Highland Heights, Ky. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
