Cardinals Fall Short at Ohio State
February 15, 2025 | Women's Lacrosse
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 9-6 to Ohio State on a cold, rainy Saturday morning at OSU Lacrosse Stadium.
Â
Senior goalkeeper J Pleck collected a career-high 12 saves and six different Cardinals tallied a goal as Louisville battled, but ultimately fell short in their first loss of the season.
Â
The teams played through the first seven minutes before Ohio State (2-0) got on the scoreboard with a goal by Kate Kyack. Louisville (2-1) responded three minutes later with a free position goal by Erin Nicholson to even the score at 1-1. Goals by Maddy Paz and Zoe Coleman gave the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead.
Â
The Cards struck first in the second quarter with Maggie McMahon converting a free position goal to make the score 3-2. Another goal by Tyack pushed the Buckeye's lead to 4-2 midway through the quarter and Ohio State took that lead into halftime.
Â
Louisville went on the outscore Ohio State 2-1 in the third quarter, starting with a quick goal as Izzy Seikel connected on an assist from Issy Leech to pull within one in the third minute of the frame. The Buckeyes wasted little time, answering a minute later with another goal by Tyack. The Cardinals countered again when Ella Berg converted on a free position shot to cut the lead to one again. The teams traded shots with both defenses standing strong as the scored remained 5-4 through at the end of the third quarter.
Â
Ohio State capitalized on a player-up opportunity to take a 6-4 lead in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but the Cards responded with a goal from Reese Whiteman to make it a 6-5 game. The Buckeyes would go on to score three straight before Negai Nakazawa notched her fifth goal of the season with 1:15 left to play for the 9-6 final.
Â
In the game, Ohio State held the advantage in shots on goal (21-13) and draw controls (14-4). Tyack led the way for the Buckeyes with four goals while Jocelyn Torres posted seven saves. Louisville's Ashley Osborne led all players with four ground balls, tying her career high.
Â
"I thought our defense played well today and J Pleck was rock solid in net," said UofL head coach Scott Teeter. "Unfortunately we didn't perform as well in some other areas. Ohio State made more plays than we did today."
Â
The Cardinals will continue their road trip with a game at Marquette on Monday at 1 p.m. (ET).
