No. 6 Cards Set to Host Virginia Tech and Virginia

Cards stand at 12-2 and 4-0 in ACC Play
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 5-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team will welcome Virginia Tech and Virginia for a pair of matches on Oct. 10 and 12, respectively. First serve against the Hokies is set for Friday at 7 p.m., and the Cards will face the Cavaliers on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ACCNX.

UofL is coming off of a 2-0 weekend on the west coast, sweeping Cal in three sets and taking down former No. 4 Stanford in four sets. Louisville handed the Cardinal its first home loss in 20 matches on Sunday afternoon.

Setter Nayelis Cabello and middle blocker Cara Cresse took home ACC Setter and Defensive Player of the Week honors for their performances over the weekend. Cabello posted 74 assists over the weekend, adding eight kills and seven blocks. Cresse was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after totaling 21 kills and 12 blocks. Cresse also hit .538 against Cal and .409 against Stanford in the wins.

Outside hitter Chloe Chicoine and outside hitter Payton Petersen both logged double-doubles against the Cardinal. Chicoine knocked down 13 kills and dug 11 balls, while Petersen added 15 kills and 14 digs. Opposite hitter Kalyssa Blackshear posted 19 kills and six blocks on the weekend, and four different Cardinals served aces across both matches. Libero Kamden Schrand served three, with Chicoine, Cabello and Petersen each serving one.

- Middle blocker Cara Cresse reached 400 career blocks on Sept. 26. She now sits at 417 total blocks, two shy of breaking into the program Top 10.
- Outside hitter Chloe Chicoine has 991 career kills, nine away from becoming the 27th Cardinal to reach 1,000 career kills. Chicoine brought 841 kills with her from two years at Purdue and has 150 so far this season.
- Louisville was ranked No. 4 in the NCAA RPI rankings that came out on Oct. 2, posting the fourth hardest schedule in NCAA Volleyball.
- Outside hitters Payton Petersen and Chloe Chicoine were two of the top receivers in Week 4. Petersen is third with a grade of 2.50 and Chicoine rounds out the Top 10 with a 2.33 grade, rated on a three-point scale.
- Outside hitter Payton Petersen and middle blocker Hannah Sherman both set new career highs in blocks against Kentucky. Petersen stuffed five and Sherman added 11 of the team total 18.5 blocks.
- Middle blocker Cara Cresse was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 for her performances against No. 2 Texas and at the Bluejay Invitational. Through four matches, Cresse posted 28 blocks and 49 kills and took home Bluejay Invitational MVP honors.
- Opposite hitter Kalyssa Blackshear and outside hitter Payton Petersen were named to the All-Bluejay Invitational Team after combining for 71 kills, 16 blocks and 35 digs.
- With a 3-1 win, Louisville handed Creighton its first home loss since 2022.
- Middle blocker Cara Cresse matched her career-high with 14 blocks against No. 2 Texas. Outside hitters Chloe Chicoine (13 kills/14 digs) and Payton Petersen (18 kills/10 digs) both posted double-doubles against the Longhorns. Nayelis Cabello tallied a career-high seven blocks against UT.
- Five different Cardinals posted new career highs against Illinois on Sept. 7. Outside hitters Chloe Chicoine and Payton Petersen along with middle blocker Kalyssa Blackshear set new highs in kills (17, 20 and 13), setter Nayelis Cabello extended her career high in assists (52) and libero Kamden Schrand added 28 digs, besting her previous high by 10.
- Libero Kamden Schrand was voted MVP of the Cardinal Classic. Outside hitters Chloe Chicoine and Payton Petersen were named to the All-Tournament Team.
- Louisville was voted to No. 5 in the AVCA Coaches Poll released on Oct. 6. The Cards were also picked to finish second in the ACC in the 2025 Preseason Poll, taking home six first-place votes.
- Setter Nayelis Cabello, outside hitter Chloe Chicoine and middle blocker Cara Cresse were selected to the ACC All-Preseason Team.
- Chloe Chicoine and Cara Cresse were named to the 2025 AVCA Division I Player of the Year Award Watch List.
- Nayelis Cabello and Cara Cresse were voted as team captains for the 2025 season. Chloe Chicoine joins them as a court captain.
- UofL finished 2024 ranked No. 1 in the nation in blocks/set (3.09) and No. 10 in opponent hitting (.154). Cara Cresse was seventh in blocks/set (1.50) and Elena Scott was No. 71 in digs/set (4.40).
- The win over No. 1 Pittsburgh in the National Semifinals was the program's highest-ever ranked opponent win. The Cards' previous record was the win over No. 2 Texas in 2019 to advance to the Austin Regional Final.
- Libero Elena Scott was named a First Team All-American by the AVCA on Dec. 18. Outside hitter Anna DeBeer was added on the Second Team, while outside hitter Charitie Luper and middle blocker Cara Cresse received honorable mentions.
- Five Cardinals racked up AVCA All-Region Honors. Cara Cresse, Anna DeBeer, Charitie Luper, and Elena Scott were named to the All-Region Team, Reese Robins was All-Region Honorable Mention, and Nayelis Cabello was selected as Region Freshman of the Year.
- Setter Nayelis Cabello was named the 2024 ACC Freshman of the Year and libero Elena Scott was selected as ACC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.

- Head coach Marci Byers is in her sixth season with the Hokies, posting a 58-92 record with the team.
- Junior outside hitter Payton Woods logged 20 kills in VT's win over Boston College on Oct. 5. Woods has recorded double-digit kills in 11 of Virginia Tech's 15 matches this season.
- Freshman middle blocker Brianna Holladay has a .422 hitting percentage, good for third in the conference. Holladay is 10th in the ACC in blocks per set with 1.24 and ninth in total blocks with 61.
- The Hokies are second in the conference in total aces, serving 106 on the year.
- VT is 9-6 so far in 2025, going 1-3 in ACC play. Virginia Tech is coming off of a 1-1 weekend after a loss to Syracuse and a win over Boston College.

- Shannon Wells is in her fifth season leading the Virginia team, owning a 60-71 overall record.
- Outside hitter Reagan Ennist was named ACC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 6 for her performances against Boston College and Syracuse. Ennist logged 32 kills in the Cavaliers' five-set win over Syracuse, and the freshman now has 110 kills on the year.
- Senior middle blocker Kate Dean is 15th in the ACC in blocks per set with 1.14 and 14th in the conference total blocks with 57.
- As a team, UVA has posted 2.49 blocks per set, good for ninth in the ACC. Virginia is also seventh in the conference in total blocks with 134.5.
- The Cavaliers are 8-6 in 2025, going 1-3 in ACC play. UVA will face Notre Dame on Friday before coming to Louisville on Sunday.
