Cards Sweep UNC Greensboro in Spring Season Opener
January 18, 2025 | Women's Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Louisville women's tennis team swept UNC Greensboro 7-0 in the season home opener Saturday at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Â
Louisville won doubles and then won all but one set in singles to sweep the Spartans.
"Very good start for this group. The group is very young and what we experienced last year was a function of youth, so I'm excited for what's happening with them now," said UofL head coach Mark Beckham. "There were a couple tight matches, and we were able to come away with a 7-0 win. That would not have happened last year. So, I'm already seeing growth in each player. So, for me, about a good a start as we could have, and we did not play as well as we could. So, I'm extremely happy with the team and we're going to take this and build on it as much as we possibly can and get two more wins next weekend."
Â
Louisville took the doubles point to start the match. Elisabeth Iila and Alice Otis struck first with a 6-1 win over Elisabeth Birkevold and Lauren Thomson.  Berta Miret and Elena Noguero clinched the point at No. 2 with a 6-2 win over Raegan Mitchell and Sydney Bly. Louisville's No. 1 duo of Allie Gretkowski and Lika Peresypkina beat Alexandra Dodashev and Olivia Gallagher 6-3.
Â
In singles, Allie Gretkowski scored the first point in singles, dispatching Lauren Thomson 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4. Germany Davis beat Sydney Bly 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 to take the Cards to a 3-0 lead. Berta Miret finished off Elisabeth Birkevold shortly thereafter, winning 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the winning point. Lika Peresypkina beat Alexandra Dodashev 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Elena Noguero handled Raegan Mitchell 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3. Alice Otis came back from a set down to win 2-6, 6-2, 10-7 at No. 1.
The Cards hit the road for a matchup with Middle Tennessee on Jan. 24 and will play Tennessee-Chattanooga on Jan. 25. UofL returns home to face Dayton Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.Â
