UofL moves to 3-1; Missouri next at the NKU Invitational
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- Anna DeBeer and Charitie Luper each had 12 kills to lead the No. 4-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team to a 3-1 win over South Dakota Friday afternoon in the first match of the Northern Kentucky Invitational.

UofL hit .412 as a team with nine aces and 14 blocks, both season highs. Louisville moves to 3-1 with the 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 25-6 win. DeBeer added four aces and two blocks to lead all scoring. Hannah Sherman came off the bench and tallied a career high in kills with 9, hitting .500 and adding eight blocks. Elena Scott led the defense with 14 digs and setters Elle Glock and Nayelise Cabello combined for 41 assists in the 6-2 offense. Reese Robins added eight kills, hit .462 and had four blocks.

South Dakota hit .087 with four aces and 3.5 blocks. The Coyotes were led by Kylen Sealock, who posted 12kills, two aces, two block and two digs.

Next up for the Cardinals will be Missouri on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Regents Hall.

Set 1
The Cardinals powered out to a 5-0 start in the first set under the power of Anna DeBeer's serves. The Coyotes scrambled back to come within two at 12-10 but a 6-1 run by UofL put the Cards up 18-11. The Coyotes hitting percentage of .043 hampered an USD comeback especially when the Cardinals were hitting .579. Down 21-14, USD called timeout but did not score again as the Cards posted the 25-14 win to take the set.
Set 2
In the second set, the 'Yotes hitting stayed cold at .071 and the Cardinal block came alive UofL connecting on five denials. Sofia Maldonado Diaz hit .667 and freshman Payton Petersen came off the bench to notch three kills and two blocks as the Cardinals cruised to the 25-17 win. UofL hit .281 with three aces in the victory.
Set 3
The Cardinals pulled out to a 9-4 lead early in the third set but then were unable to pull away as they did in the first two sets. The Coyotes tied at 17 and then took their first lead of the match at 18-17 on a kill by Kylen Sealock. The teams traded points back and forth, but when USD scored two in a row to go up 22-21, Coach Dani Busboom Kelly called timeout. Afte the break, the Cardinals were able to tie at 23 but then a kill by Lauren Medeck and an ace by Kamryn Farris gave USD the 25-23 win in the third. UofL hit a respectable .313 with two blocks. The 'Yotes' hitting heated up to .290 in the stanza with a pair of aces to their credit.
Set 4
The loss galvanized the Cardinals, who powered out to a 12-1 lead with South Dakota burning both its timeouts during the run. Things did not improve for the Coyotes as UofL hit a torrid .632 with three aces and four blocks to hand South Dakota a 25-6 loss. It was the fewest points allowed in a non-fifth set since Louisville held Wake Forest to five in 2001.
