Cardinals Close Homestand Against New Hampshire
August 21, 2024 | Women's Soccer
Thursday’s match is part of a doubleheader with the men’s team
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team is set to close out its three game homestand this Thursday night as they welcome the New Hampshire Wildcats to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Thursday's match is part of a doubleheader with the men's program as they open their season against Jacksonville. The men's match is set for 5 p.m. ET and the women will follow shortly after their game ends at 7:30 p.m. and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
The Cardinals are 2-0 to start the season and the offense has been at full swing over the first two games. Louisville has scored 10 goals so far, good for second-best in the ACC over the opening week. Heading into the season, the Cardinals were in search of new offensive production and there has been plenty so far. Seven different players have scored a goal this year after only nine different players scored last season. Last season, it took the Cardinals until their 10th game of the season to record their 10th goal and the Cards only scored 15 total goals all of last year.
Mackenzie Geigle, Karsyn Cherry and Amber Jackson have been the offensive catalysts so far this year. Geigle leads the team in points with five after goals in each game and an assist in the opener. Heading into the season, Geigle had just two career points in 31 games played. Cherry had three career goals heading into the season and she has connected in both games this season coming off of corner kicks. Jackson tallied her first career brace in the opener after missing the 2023 season due to injury.
The Louisville defense has also been strong to begin the year. They have allowed just one goal over 180 minutes played and it came off a penalty kick. In both games, Louisville did not allow a single shot in the first halves. Opposing teams have only tallied five shots total against the Cards in the first two games.
New Hampshire enters Thursday's match with a similar 2-0 record after wins in the opening week against Stonehill (2-0) and Holy Cross (3-2). In the win over Holy Cross, the Wildcats scored twice in the final six minutes to come from behind to earn the win. New Hampshire is coming off a 2023 season where they went 6-6-5 overall and were 3-1-4 in CAA play. This will be the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
Following Thursday's match against the Wildcats, the Cardinals will hit the road for the first time this season. A two-game road swing is on deck and begins on Sunday, August 25 as the Cards travel to Highland Heights to take on Northern Kentucky.
