Louisville begins the season 2-0 after scoring 10 goals in the first two games
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville women's soccer team kept its winning ways going as they defeated UAB 3-1 Sunday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals (2-0-0) got an early goal from Mackenzie Geigle and two insurance goals in the second half to pick up their second win of the season. Through two games this year, the Cardinals have scored 10 goals after scoring 15 goals in all of last season.
It was a start to the game as neither team recorded a shot over the first 15 minutes of play. That all changed in the 27th minute.
Good lead up play from Karsyn Cherry and Molly Cochran and the ball got up to Emma Kate Schroll. She sent a cross towards Geigle as she was entering the top of the box. Geigle took a great touch forward that got her 1-v-1 with the keeper and she went far side to finish off the goal. It was her second goal of the season and gave the Cards a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals almost doubled their lead in the final minutes of the first half as Fina Davy pounced on a turnover but her shot sailed high of the goal. The Cardinals held a 5-0 lead in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. It was the second-straight game the Cards did not allow a shot in the first half.
The Cardinals doubled their lead in the 67 minute and it was from another player who scored in Thursday's opener. Schroll sent the corner kick towards the center of the box and Cherry maneuvered her way through the Blazer defense and was the first to the ball. She sent a driven header into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and Schroll tallied her second assist of the night to extend the Louisville lead to 2-0.
The lead grew to three as a newcomer found the scoresheet for the first time in her collegiate career in the 80th minute. Transfer Gianna Angelillo had a great run up the left side and sent a low cross in the six-yard box right in front of the keeper. Davy was all over it and was the first to the ball and calmly slotted it into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. With the goal, the Cardinals held a 3-0 lead.
UAB got on the scoreboard after a penalty kick goal following a hand ball inside the box in the 81st minute. The Blazers began to press forward looking for more but the Cardinals defense stood strong to finish out the win.
Erynn Floyd picked up her second win of the season and did not have much action in the run of play. She did not see a shot in the first half for the second-straight game and then made the save on the one shot on goal she faced during open play in the second half.
The Cardinals are set to close out their three-game homestand on Thursday night as they welcome New Hampshire to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Thursday's match will be the second of a doubleheader with the men's team as they open their season against Jacksonville at 5 p.m. The women's match will begin shortly after the men's match ends and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
