Eagles take game one on a two-out walk-off homer
BRIGHTON, Mass. – The University of Louisville softball team took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but a two-out home run by Zoe Hines lifted Boston College to a 3-2 win in their Atlantic Coast Conference series opener Friday evening at the Harrington Athletic Village.Â
The Cardinals (26-24, 7-15 ACC) and the Eagles (28-22, 8-14) will square off again Saturday at 12 p.m. in an ACC Network televised matchup.
Â
Friday's opener featured a pitcher's duel with Alyssa Zabala tossing a one-hitter and Boston College starter Abby Dunning scattering five hits in a compete game effort. Zabala (18-15) took the loss, surrendering three earned runs on one hit while striking out three in 6.2 innings. Dunning (13-13) picked up the win, giving up two earned runs and fanning five.
Â
Louisville jumped to an early lead when Daisy Hess led off the game with a walk and Chelsea Mack reached safely on a bunt single. One out later, Bailee Richardson sent the first pitch she saw over the left field fence, but an appeal play at first base negated a run to make the score 2-0.
Â
The Eagles countered in the bottom of the second when a trio of walks loaded the the bases and Elisabeth Laviolette was hit by a pitch to put Boston College on the scoreboard.
Â
The Cards placed runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings and again in the seventh when Paige Geraghty delivered a lead off single, moved to second on Kiley Goff's sacrifice bunt and took third on a groundout by Hess but was stranded by another groundout.
Â
Following Boston College's run in the second inning, Zabala and the Cardinals' defense retired the next 13 batters until Jules Shields drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh. Two outs later, Hines broke up Zabala's no-hitter with a shot over the left field fence to give the Eagles the 3-2 win.
Â
Louisville was led at the plate by Mack who went 2-for-4 with a run and Richardson who tallied a pair of RBIs on the day.
