April 06, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Maggie McMahon recorded her first multiple-goal game but the University of Louisville women's lacrosse team (6-8, 2-4 ACC) fell short to No. 11 Virginia (11-3, 3-4 ACC) by a 13-8 margin on senior day.
11 seniors were recognized today for Louisville's annual senior day celebration. The players honored included Sara Addeche, Kylea Dobson, Kokoro Nakazawa, Sydney Kirchenheiter, Allegra Catalano, Madi McKee, Liz Kennedy, Ashley Osborne, Olivia Toll, Nicole Perroni, and student-assistant Chloe Fisher.
"We played really hard today," said Head Coach Scott Teeter. "Our defense played well but unfortunately we couldn't get the ball to close out the game."
After a slow start to the first quarter, Catalano opened up the scoring on an assisted goal by Kokoro Nakazawa at the 10 minute mark. The Cavaliers responded with three straight goals but Negai Nakazawa was able to get on the board to close out the first quarter.
Kokoro started off the second frame with a goal assisted by Perroni but Virginia's Jenna Dinardo tallied two back-to-back goals to respond, making it a two-goal deficit for the Cards. Halfway through the second quarter, Dobson cut the margin to one goal but the Cavaliers had two goals in less than a minute to extend the lead once more.
Perroni closed out the half with a goal, tallying her 50th consecutive goal-scoring game. The Cards were down 7-5 going into the locker room.
Louisville outscored Virginia 2-1 in the third quarter due to goals from McMahon and Kokoro Nakazawa but could not find the back of the net in the final frame. Virginia went on a five-goal run in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
The Cards outdrew Virginia, 13-12 as Madi McKee tied her season high with seven draw controls in route to tallying her 200th career-draw control this afternoon.
"Our defense forced Virginia to make difficult plays this afternoon," said Coach Teeter.
"We fought hard, we got the ground balls, and we made the stops," said senior Sydney Kirchenheiter. "(Olivia) Toll was locking down on Morgan Schwab who is a tough competitor and she did a great job there."
Sara Addeche had her sixth game of the season with double-digit saves, recording 11 on the afternoon.
Virginia's Mackenzie Hoeg led all scorers with four goals and Morgan Schwab led with three assists and a goal of her own.
The Cards will close out their non-conference schedule at home this week with a Tuesday (April 9) matchup against Ohio State. The first draw will take place at 1 p.m. ET and can be watched on the ACCNX.
