Freshman Kosuke Nakanishi earns UofL’s lone singles victory
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UofL fell to #35 Georgia Tech on Friday evening in the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cardinals battled against the Yellow Jackets, but ultimately was defeated 4-2 in the match.
"We competed hard but Georgia Teach played better at the right moments, so full credit goes to them," said head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We have to go back to work and capitalize on the opportunities ahead of us."
After Will Mayew and Enrique Peña dropped the first doubles court to #19 Keshav Chopra and Marcus McDaniel, the Cardinals came thundering back on courts two and three.
Miguel Avendaño and Natan Rodrigues teamed up in the third spot in the UofL lineup and won 6-3. Etienne Donnet and Kosuke Nakanishi were the No. 2 doubles pair for the afternoon and beat Georgia Tech 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for the Cards. It's the first doubles point for Louisville in ACC action since winning it against Miami on March 3.
In singles, the Yellow Jackets won the first match, beating Peña 6-1, 6-3. They picked up their second point with a win on Court 4 as #112 Mayew went down 6-4, 6-4.
Andre' Steinbach won the last three games of set two to force a third set, but his Georgia Tech opponent proved to be too much, relinquishing a 3-1 lead to the Yellow Jackets.
Freshman Nakanishi picked up the Cardinals' second point in three sets on Court 5, just before Rodrigues surrendered the clinching point to Georgia Tech on Court 2.
The match between #47 Donnet and #12 Andres Martin went unfinished on Court 1. Louisville moves to 13-11 on the year and 2-7 in league action.
Louisville will play in its final home match of the season on Sunday against Clemson while also celebrating Senior Day for fifth-year seniors Donnet and Matthew Fung. Festivities will begin at approximately 11:45 a.m. with first serve at noon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
