Cards Fall in Series Opener at Georgia Tech

Louisville shut out for only the second time this season in 8-0 loss at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA – The University of Louisville softball team lost to Georgia Tech 8-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference series opener Friday evening at Mewborn Field.

The Cardinals (23-17, 4-9 ACC) and the Yellow Jackets (27-16, 10-6 ACC) will meet in game two Saturday at 2 p.m.

Georgia Tech broke through early with a run in the first inning. A pair of walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out and an RBI fielder's choice by Madison Dobbins put the Jackets on top 1-0.

Tech's offense continued as the Jackets capitalized on four hits, including a three-run homer by Mallorie Black to score four runs in the second inning and used Sara Beth Allen's three-run homer in the third to take an 8-0 lead.

The Cards had a chance to score in the top of the fourth when Bailee Richardson led off with a walk and Vanessa Miller was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved in to scoring position on a groundout by Paige Geraghty, Georgia Tech pitcher Sophia Voyles retired the next batter to hold Louisville at bay as the Cards were shut out for only the second time this season.

Alyssa Zabala (16-10) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Maddi Grant delivered a double to lead the Cardinals at the plate. Daisy Hess earned a walk to extend her on-base streak to 19 games.

Voyles (8-2) earned the win, surrendering one hit and striking out two in a complete game effort.
