Louisville Drops Match 6-1 to #14 Duke

Mayew earns Cardinals’ lone point
DURHAM, N.C. – Louisville Men's Tennis dropped a tough 6-1 battle against the #14 Duke Blue Devils in Durham on Friday evening.
The Cardinals will first able to win from the third doubles spot. Matthew Fung and Andre' Steinbach teamed up to take down a duo of Blue Devils 6-3. Will Mayew and Enrique Peña dropped a match on Court 2 6-4 against #25 Zhang/Heller.
The doubles point all came down to Court 1 in a top-10 showdown between #6 Johns/Rodenas and #9 Etienne Donnet and Natan Rodrigues. Duke ultimately won the match 7-5 to claim the doubles point and an early lead over the Cardinals.
UofL won the first sets on just two courts, but on two others, the Cards were able to force a third set. Donnet and Rodrigues both dropped their singles matches in straight sets against top-55 ranked individuals.
Steinbach fell to his opponent on Court 3 in three sets, giving the Blue Devils the fourth point to clinch the match. Playing it out, Miguel Avendaño was the next to fall, defeated by his opponent 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Mayew made an incredible comeback on Court 4 to earn the Cardinals' lone point of the day. After losing the first set 6-2, he bounced back to win 6-4, forcing a third set. He ultimately won that third 7-5 against Duke's Connor Krug.
The last Cardinal playing was freshman Kosuke Nakanishi. He won his first set 7-5 before dropping the second. The third set was competitive, but Duke proved too strong, taking the final set of the night 6-4.
Louisville will play against the #24 Tar Heels of UNC on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. ET.
